Pre-race routine:

got up at 4:30am; had a bagel, checked out of the hotel and drove to race site.
Event warmup:

set-up transition area, 2 Endurolytes, had a little pre-swim; felt great in the warm water. That would quickly change.
Swim
  • 31m 45s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

worst swim ever; made bad decision to wear clear lenses at outset of the race and then just as I was turning the first bouy - bam: heading straight into the sun that had poked through the clouds. Choppy water on second half of the course. Went back to inefficient, breathe every stroke on the right. Felt winded and bloated as I exited the water. Looked at watch and shouted loud obscenity as I realized my time. Knew at that point that my day was done.
What would you do differently?:

learn how to swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

good T1; had practiced getting into and out of shoes while they are on the bike and paid off for me. The Pro-motion wet suit feature of the zippers at the heels are very helpful in removal. Had forgotten my body glide, so lubed-up with chapstick on my feet. Seemed to be an OK replacement.
What would you do differently?:

not much; more practice is always good, but overall OK.
Bike
  • 1h 05m 15s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.85 mile/hr
Comments:

seemed like there was a lot of wind on the course and the flat profile was a little deceptive. A lot of false flats that sapped energy; not many places to open it up and hammer at high pace. Did not leave the big ring once and still felt very comfortable with gearing. Tried to keep an even, consistent cadence at 100-110, which helped spin up the small hills with ease. Got passed by only one guy that was able to stay ahead of me. Course was very gravelly; saw a nasty fall by one of the Elite dudes that scraped the whole side of his face. The guy who took third in my AG said he stopped to roll the guy over after the fall and that he was out cold. Ambulance arrived shortly thereafter (which is when I saw him; he was in bad shape). The roads on this ride were treacherous in parts, almost wiped out in 2 corners in soft sand on the road.

5th in AG and 18th overall on bike is pretty good. Happy with that.
What would you do differently?:

More volume on my rides; speed work is good, and power work is good (on Computrainer). But need more volume, even while trainig for Oly distance.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

couldn't do any better. Was in the middle rack-wise, so a little longer run to my spot, but otherwise, very happy with T2.

First in AG...that is very good for me. Worked hard at transitions this year.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 44m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

started at easy, even pace, and then gradually ramped it up. Finished very strong. Happy with run, but wanted sub-7 min/mi.
What would you do differently?:

more volume; continue to use recovery techniques, need to lose another 5 pounds. Ideal race weight: 160.
Post race
Warm down:

2 scoops of Recoverite; ate a BBQ sandwich, water, and juice. Tried to force down a banana, but just didn't taste right.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I did not come close to my goal of a sub 2:15 race because:

1. my swim was sub-par even by my forgiving standards of swimming
2. when I realized my swim time, I knew there was no way to make up my lost time and modified my goals: first to be above 25mph avg on bike (quickly realized the head wind would not allow that), then a sub- 7min/mi pace on run (almost made that).
3. need more endurance/volume in my training. Hard to do with my schedule lately, but have to find a way.

I need to remember that this was a Regional Qualifying race for USAT; there were some crazy-fast people in this race. The guy who got third in my AG has done Kona the last 2 years. That's tough competition. If I can't commit to real coaching and learning to swim, next year will be another year of mediocrity.

Event comments:

Good race; very organized. The bike course was very rough, but well-marked. There were a ton of volunteers everywhere on the course. It was impossible to take a wrong turn and there was plenty of water/gatorade.
