Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am (hard to do after being up late watching the Penguins win the Stanley Cup), got ready then had two yogurts and some coffee. Met my friend Nate at 4:30 at the Publix on Delk for the ride down. It was his first Int distance and with his excitement, he was earlier than me to the parking lot. Got his gear in my car and we were off.
After parking, I checked in (with my complete rest plan the past two weeks I weighed in at 201 lbs. this morning, so I didn't even bother changing divisions as this was a "B" or even "C" race for me today), then set up my transition spot. Nate had me look over his set up, then we just walked around, talked to some friends, and hit the Porta Potty a couple times.

Event warmup:

None. I didn't even want to get wet early with the breeze and the delay with resetting the bouys.
Swim
  • 32m 29s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

What a great feeling swim this was. I definitelt saw the rewards of all my practicing as far as my stroke, breathing, endurance. That being said, my usual awesome navigation totally fell apart at the wrong time this morning. On the far straight away after the first turn, about half way across, I look up and I am all alone far out from the swim line. FARTS! I don't want to guess what this mistake cost me, but it was significant I'm sure. Oh well, at least the water felt good.

2008 Swim Time = 32:25
2009 Swim Time = 32:29 (What a joke!)
What would you do differently?:

Look up more for better navigation!
Transition 1
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

I'm shocked this was as fast as it was. I actually ran towel over my face for a change.
The best instance of getting up to speed with feet on top of shoes and slipping them on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

2008 T1 = 1:23
2009 T1 = 0:51
Bike
  • 1h 17m 13s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.31 mile/hr
Comments:

I wanted to keep an average of 20 mph, so I failed at that. But all in all this was a comfortable fast pace for me considering my mind was on my knee during the run portion.
Oh, and great biking ettiquette out there people. Several racers pointed out road debris ahead of me, and a lot of positive chatter while passing me...I appretiate that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...for a "B" race, this pace saved my knee and didn't ruin my race.

2008 Bike = 1:18:52
2009 Bike = 1:17:13

Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

Had trouble with the left shoe going on and had to drop to my right knee to get leverage to pull it on, so I'm surprised to see this time so fast. But oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Adjust my Yanks a bit.

2008 = 1:03
2009 = 0:47

Run
  • 1h 03m 17s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Despite this run being over one hour, I'm pleased with it just because my right knee or IT band caused me any pain resulting in any walking. Having a few races already this year ruined by hellish runs, this was a big boost for me. But it leaves me wondering if I could have pushed a little faster for a better time.
Props to the cloud haze keeping the temp down a bit compared to last year! And props again to the old guy finishing the sprint. I saw him while heading back on the run and stopped to shake his hand. What a cool guy!
What would you do differently?:

Looking back, push my pace a bit to run some negative splits and get my finish time a bit lower.

2008 Run = 1:05:17
2009 Run = 1:03:17
Post race
Warm down:

Got water, T shirt, and then sat and ate some watermelon & choc chip cookies (many of those) while waiting for my friend, Nate, to finish. He did a respectable job for his first venture into the Int distance. But I just enjoy cheering all the racers into the finish...you see some great views into some of their souls.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Taking two weeks completely off and gaining back some weight from diet slipping.
Only four minutes faster from last year, even though this year I felt ten times more in shape. I don't know.

Event comments:

Distance inconsistencies were a gripe from a lot of racers. But I've never organized a race myself, so I'd have to think this was stressful for them also.
