Pre-race routine:

Woke up and had a small bowl of cereal. Went out and got some coffees for my wife and mother-in-law. Got ready and walked over to the park, where the buses were parked.
Event warmup:

We had to sit in the canyon for about 90 minutes for the race to start. Met up with Woody Noleen chatted a bit and jogged some for about 15 mins. prior to race start.

Comments:

This is almost an exact replay of last year's race only faster. Just like last year my whole plan was to go out fast, ignore hr, splits, and hope that I when I hit the wall there's a finish line in sight. First mile was really quick. Checked my watch and it was 5:51 and thought just roll with it. Hit the 3 mile at 18:13 so just like last year I think I pr'ed the 5k. Took in a Roctane at 30 minutes. Hit mile 6 at 37:23. Was feeling really good and took in another Roctane right at the hour hoping to stave off the fade as long as possible. Last year I felt like I was starting to pop right at the 10 mile mark. This year that didn't happen until mile 12. So I'm pretty happy with that. I knew if my legs were going then my head could pull me to the finish line. Made the final turn into the finish line as was pretty certain I was going sub-1:24. When the official clock actually came into focus I knew I was cutting it close. I picked it up as much as I could and came in with 5 seconds to spare :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I'm happy with this.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged around the park a bit. Stretched out. Took and ice bath an hour later at the hotel. OUCH!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Current fitness level. But I'll keep chopping away at it and in a couple years I'll be going under 1:20 for this distance.

Event comments:

My goal was under 1:24, but I knew it was going to take one hell of a mental effort. I may have been able to go faster, but I hit my goal and qualified for Bolder Boulder "A" wave. I absolutely love this race. It's a combination of being in Moab, Pasta Jay's, the Native American drummers, the course, and everything that goes into it. It's without a doubt my favorite running race.
