Pre-race routine:

up at 5:45, layed around for 10 min. quick shower, packed up the car and headed to site.Stopped to chat with a Donkey, who brayed quite loudly when I STOPPED taking his picture! Yogurt, Mountain Dew (didn't have any Diet Pepsi!) Wandered around T1, chatted with Scott/wife/inlaws. Met Eric Jones (bter) found bikes for Dave Crownover and Melissa Gonzalez, couldn't find them though! Banana, granola bar...wander some more. (my wave wasn't until 10:01)
Event warmup:

3 "loops" near Du start. did a loop, stretch, wander, then another, repeat. Some high knees, butt kicks, good stretch. biggest decision was what to keep on, what to lose in the way of clothes, since it was 46 at the start. Had to race naked. (got your attention!...only means that I had no mascara packed...oh the horrors, to race without mascara!)

Comments:

not sure the mile marker was in the right spot..but it was super hilly, people walking up the biggest hill during the FIRST mile! Felt great! 5th into T1, 4th out. (my wave was all females 35 and up...68 women.)
What would you do differently?:

run a flat course with no wind? oh yeah, that wasn't an option!
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

out of T1, bike mount line is the start of a rather LARGE hill! Slow to clip in, and was a total dufus and had my bike in the small ring in front, but hardest in back...was thinking small, easy...duh. Fairly long run out of T1 to get to mount line.
What would you do differently?:

have gears in the easiest, knowing the hill was there.

Comments:

8mph up most of the hills, in the easiest gear more than I care to remember. Had to break on some downhills, was only around 27 but the winds were causing my bike to wobble big time. Head or cross wind for majority of race, some tail wind for a couple of miles (relief!) One spot, for about 10 seconds, was WARM!! Dropped my chain (in 12 years the only times Ive done that were at Du Nats this year and today!!) around mile 3, was sure I had the gears ok to drop down in the front, oh well. Passed by about 10 people during that time. Got most if not all, back again. Passed people consistently the whole ride, passed by a few guys and 2 women (tri, not du) I think. Really raced hard, felt great, played my gears very well.
What would you do differently?:

NOT drop my chain!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

quick gulp of Gatorade, grabbed a GU and took off. No leg issues at all, pretty quick into a good cadence.
What would you do differently?:

happy with it!

Comments:

GREAT run! Felt awesome, kept pushing myself, passed alot of people, guys and girls. Passed by 1 guy. Did not walk at all, stopped for water x1. Loved the negative splits!!
What would you do differently?:

nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

promplty went into bronchospasm...coughed my head off for about 15 minutes. Quick Gatorade and water, headed for the shuttle bus to go back to T1 and get my car. (a 1 1/2 hr endeavor!). Changed into warm clothes, and back to T2 for awards ceremony and to pick up my bike.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

wind, hills...but everyone had the same, so no issues. Raced very well, I was very pleased with my effort. Even if I had not placed, would have been happy with how I raced.

Event comments:

Very well organized, great food buffet! Course VERY well marked! Only thing I sorta didn't like, they did not post results!! You had to stay for the awards to know how you did. Even on the online results, which were up by 6pm (wow!), did not have full age group results. Only top 3 in each. You had to count the people in your age group from the full results. A bit cumbersome. I got over that quickly! Definite do over next year.
