Swim
Comments: Great Swim. I'm not the fastest swimmer in the world but felt fast on the course. Got a little off on sighting the bouy with the glare from the sun but corrected fairly quickly. I was out of the water in about 9:30. What would you do differently?: Try to sight a little better. Transition 1
Comments: I couldn't feel my feet once I got out of the water. I banged my right hand around pretty good and generally wasn't my best transition. I did pretty well under the circumstance. What would you do differently?: Not slip ... figure out a way to feel my feet. Bike
Comments: First race on the new bike. It was a great ride. Pushed the pace a tiny bit. The bike handled really well. Didn't see many people from my wave. Watched a number of college teams blow past in packs ... yeah guys it's a no drafting race. I had cut my thumb somewhere on the swim or in T1 and it bled all over. My race bib ended up all bloody along with my aero bars. What would you do differently?: Nothing ... I had a great ride and this was a training race. Transition 2
Comments: I still couldn't feel my feet getting off the bike. I had a hard time running and transitioning to running shoes was hysterical. I couldn't feel my feet and had an impossible time shoving them into running shoes. My transition didn't take long but wasn't my best. What would you do differently?: Figure out how to thaw out the feet. Run
Comments: Run was great. Wasn't passed by any women (a first for me). I was a little freaked running on numb feet. I really couldn't feel the terrain and with the potholes and uneven footing I was convinced that I was going to injure myself. Hit the aid station for water on the way out. They ran out of water by the time I was on my way back. They offered gu but the thought of Gu with out water turned my stomach. It was only a mile to the finish so I opted to finish it out. The feeling in my feel returned with less that 1/2 a mile from the finish. What would you do differently?: Nothing ... it was a training race. Plan was to hold it back and enjoy the first race of the season Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some water and went looking for first aid. There wasn't any so in cleaned up the thumb with a cup of water and went to tidy up transition. What limited your ability to perform faster: The cold ... but it was a training race so I didn't push as much as I could. Event comments: This was a fun race. I'd do it again. Great to see all the college kids out there. We had two reality stars entered in the race, Survivor winner Parvati Shallow (she was in my age group and placed 5th) and some guy from the Amazing Race. It was fun to get out there early in the season. The Age Groupers are outnumbered by the college racers but it's a great race if you want a better chance of hitting the podium. Loved the awards ceremony, loved the stunts. Throw your friend in the bay win a water bottle, do the most push ups win a wetsuit. Very fun! I would consider coming back for next year. Up at 4:00, had some breakfast and loaded the bike in the car and I was off. Headed down to Mission Bay, parked and unloaded my gear. I had registered the day before so I bypassed the registration line and went straight to transition to set up. Found a spot near the end of a rack between the Stanford and USC teams. Chatted with a couple of Age Groupers and tried to stay warm. I eventually put on the wetsuit and headed to the start. The open women wave was second to last so we got to sit back and watch.
Got a little swim in, my feet were frozen and the water actually felt warm. I chatted with a couple of women in my wave while we waited for our turn.
