Swim
Comments: Just like in Boulder I could have swum harder, but didn't want to sacrifice for the rest of the event. Swam the 1st 500 at a warm up-ish pace, pushed a little harder on the outdoor segment but again was saving for later; I had the gravel utility line uphills in the back of my mind. Overall strong swim, smooth stroke, maybe next time jack up the stroke cadence a bit. Mission accomplished here What would you do differently?: Higher stroke cadence Transition 1
Comments: Felt good getting out of the water and then Mistake #1 popped up - Gu pack in the back shirt pocket snagged when I pulled it over my head, and took 20-30 seconds to get it un-rolled and on. So I'm cursing aloud at myself and stat to move past it when I realize that helmet on is simple because my sunglasses aren't waiting in it to be slapped on my face. So now I dig into my bag, find the pocket of my sweat jacket, dig the glasses out, and now another ~30 seconds gone. Socks/shoes went well, of to the hillz we go...! What would you do differently?: Not be a bumbling stooge doing things I should have practiced (gu in shirt) or re-checked with all the spare time (transition layout) Bike
Comments: Felt good but leg-winded from the swim, don't know why because I really don't kick. Tempted to crank hard esp. since the two riders out with me were similar paced; BikeSource uni'd lady on a cervelo with really low cadence, and another who cat-and-moused with me on the 1st lap until Broadway downhill @40, where she fell back a bit. Saved a little for the 2nd uphill which worked well. What would you do differently?: more hill training, longer rides, get a proper fitting. And aero bars maybe. Transition 2
Comments: Had to [gently] shove the bike opposite but next to me out of the way to squeeze my bike on the rack. Shoes were quick (Yankz!), hat, number belt, strapped the Nathan pack on while on my way out. Really glad I had that thing again, the aid station at the run turnaround was out of water when I got there What would you do differently?: nada, this went well for me Run
Comments: I should be happy that this hilly course took roughly the same time as Boulder's flat did. 1st time I ever felt good leaving a transition to run, but it only lasted until the creek bottom. From there it's a solid mile + uphill, and my lower left back spasms started in for the 1st time in months, which caught me off-guard. So again, I broke stride frequently on uphills, jogged flats and ran downhills. That worked pretty good until ass-cramps started in on a mild uphill around mile 4, the glutes were clearly displeased with the required effort. I doused myself well at the last two aid stations, and after the 2 cup bath I gave myself at the MHM tent it was all downhill to the end; just one little teaser hill from the creek-bed to the parking lot finish area. What would you do differently?: Do a formal/structured run training plan, which of course requires healthy feet. I will ultimately do a sub-60 10k as part of a triathlon. Post race
Warm down: Walked the lot, stretched some, too long a line to get to the massage table. Nice thing about being on home turf though, went into the rec center and took a shower before hitting Pasta Jay's & CB Potts. Nothing like cheese tortellini & amber ale for a 2nd breakfast! Then home, collect the family, and back with Cameron & Sutter for the Kids Mini Tris! What limited your ability to perform faster: the run Event comments: I like the little local format. Surprised the were only 122 entrants, but nice to have the experience at the other end of the spectrum from Boulder Peak Last updated: 2009-02-01 12:00 AM

Highlands Ranch Run Series
Sunny
Overall Rank = 60/122
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 6/9
Packed everything Friday night, laid out breakfast, ran through the checklist and then gave the bike the visual once over. Somehow form the last ride I took the rear wheel was badly out of true, stopping dead on the left pad. Put in the rack and gave myself an instant truing lesson, I managed to get it to un-stick-able. This did not add to the comfort of my sleep I was aiming for 7-8 hrs and probably got 6 - 6 1/2.
Up at 4:15, breakfast and fed the dogs, loaded the car and out the door right before 5. I was aiming for early in case I had to wait in line for the BikeSource guys - ultimately I was their 1st customer, and they gave me back a perfectly trued rear wheel - Whew!
And on the radio driving over, Steeler's Wheel/Stuck in the Middle with You
"...Got a feeling that something ain't right..." No joke, I also woke up with what I knew was the very beginning of a head cold
Walked, stretched, lots of time to kill for both. A few laps before our lane started, the diving well was closed so no swim there.
