Swim
Comments: Did not think I went that fast. Could tell by labored breathing that I was going pretty hard, so I slowed down and tried longer strokes after the first 500. Tight pack for first five minutes. I did not jostle for position - just ceded when hit or squeezed. After that, had space to swim. Goggles got foggy which impacted sighting, so I used other swimmers rather than buoys. Can't complain about time! What would you do differently?: Try to get in rhythm sooner. Transition 1
Comments: Uneventful. Tight racks, but enough space to do my thing. No rush. Bike
Comments: Averaged 20.75 first hour, 20.25 second hour, then got killed by strong headwind hit at mile 40ish. I chose not to push in hopes of saving my legs for the run, as I realized I would come in under 3 hours. What would you do differently?: Train more on bike to get used to pushing harder. Transition 2
Comments: Got to rack and there was no room for my bike. Had to gently overlap bars of a neighbor. Realized my race # was hanging on by one tie, as one ripped on bike. Stopped to secure it. Maybe lost 10 secs. Run
Comments: Knew heat could kill me so stuck to drinking plan: about 4 - 6 ounces every station. Ice in hat and water on head too. Ahhhhh...felt good. Mental plan was to try to take the first 3 miles easy, then push for 3.5, ease up for 3 and then grit it out for the last 3.5. Mile 1 @ 7:45 so I slowed down to about 8:20 on 2. Still tried to slow up and was about 8:18 for 3. Last 4 miles were hard - had to take it in 1/2 mile chunks and fight urge to stop. What would you do differently?: Better mental plan for the end. Post race
Warm down: Drank A LOT and waited for friends. Got a massage (ahhhhh!) and ate everything I could get my hands on. Felt pretty damn good. What limited your ability to perform faster: Power training on bike. Event comments: My only comment is to get better food. Cold pasta as the only main course? C'mon! Pizza? BBQ? I just busted my ass - gimme some *FOOD*!!! Last updated: 2009-02-01 12:00 AM
