Age Group Rank = 19/43?
Pre-race routine:

Woke-up at 3:50- ate a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Drank 24 oz water and then 24 oz of diluted sports drink. Picked-up my car and drove.. Out the door by 4:30 ish.
Event warmup:

Not much of a warm-up. Swam around 150 yrds to get a feel of the water. It was cold but i expected colder.
Swim
  • 17m 5s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

I should have started in front of my wave. Started in back due to my last race's panic attack. I couldn't get past the masses of people until the 3rd turn. During the swim to the first marker this guy was grabbing me every 20 sec until the 2nd marker. I couldn't get past him because of all the other people in front of me. I must of been in the most crowded area of my wave. Sighting was good the first half of the race. Went off course twice because I forgot to sight at the later half of the race. Disappointed in my swim, but it was my fault for not trusting myself to start in front of the pack.
What would you do differently?:

Start in front of the wave.
Transition 1
  • 03m 37s
Comments:

Ok transition. The suit stuck a bit and i couldn't get my tri-shirt on. Had to take it off and put it on again 3 times.. Forced myself to drink a little.
What would you do differently?:

Next race is warmer so I would wear my tri-top under the wetsuit.
Bike
  • 44m 23s
  • 13.55 miles
  • 18.32 mile/hr
Comments:

I had major problems clipping in. I jumped on the bike and couldn't clip in either feet. Wasted the little down hill in the start and had to jump off due to the small up-hill (i wasn't clipped in either foot yet). I had to run the bike up and then clip in.. I was pissed.. So many people passed me during my clipping fiasco. I passed most people that passed me once I clipped in. I must of wasted 1.5 - 2 min on my mistake, though according to the race results i still avged 18.6 mph.
What would you do differently?:

position my pedals better.. Push a little harder, drink more. I think I only drank 5 oz on the bike. Hurt me on the run.

Tri-bike? Noticed that I would pass people on tri-bikes on hills and hold my own on down hills, but they would beat me on flats.. I passed and got passed by the same group of people on tri-bikes throughout the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

My cleat stuck a little. When I dismounted, I didn't realize my left foot was still in but wasn't too bad. I learned a lot of people had this problem because they couldn't feel their feet/the feet were numb due to the cold swim. One person fell flat on his face.
Run
  • 28m 18s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Very very hard run for me. First ever off road run. Even running on the grass slowed me down a ton. I looked at my pace on the grass it was 6.5 miles per hr and then on the boardwalk it was 8 mph going at the same effort. Run through the woods was tough, it was probably over 2 miles of running through the woods in narrow trails, very hard to pass anyone. Several steep climbs and several things you had to jump over. You constantly had to watch were you step because of all the roots and largish rocks. Some muddy areas and several bridges to jump on to (6 overall i think). Ton of turns i was sort-of disoriented, it was like i was running through a maze. It was fun but very hard for me. Should have drank much more on the bike. during the last half mile my right quad and hamstring felt like they were about to cramp. I stopped and stretched a little and it felt much better. Tough run..
What would you do differently?:

practice running in those conditions? Even though my time is way off, I was ok with the time because of how difficult it was.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank 2 gatorades and had brunch the organizers prepared. My friend Scott did well too.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My mistakes. This is my 2nd tri and i learned just as much as my first. I'm glad i did it.

Event comments:

very nice volunteers, very organized race and nice food at the end.
