![]() Swim
Comments: Was not 1500m, probably more like 1100 to 1200m. All males over 40 were in the wave so there was around 50. A little crowded at the start bu I managed to find clear water fairly quickly. Got a couple of drafts but mainly swam on my own. Navigation was a bit dodgy. Got passed by a 3 swimmers from the wave after mine but that was the team wave so once they had swum they were done for the day. Passed a few from the wave that started 2 mins before mine. What would you do differently?: Go a little harder, and start nearer to the front of the wave. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Bit slow getting through T1.Long way from swim exit to transition area and transition had a long run through it to the bike. Couldn't find rear pocket in tri suit to put gel in and fiddled around putting race belt on What would you do differently?: tape gel to bike and practice running in bare feet after the swim ![]() Bike
Comments: Fairly straightforward course. Hills were a good change from most other courses. Headwind on the return leg was a good test. Eating a gel on the bike was interesting as it tasted like crap and was hard to get down What would you do differently?: Took the shoes on at transition approach and had a bit of trouble engaging the cleats at the mounting line. Maybe should practice the shoes in the cleats approach and go that way next season. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Good transition ![]() Run
Comments: Was a very hard run as I had little left in the tank. Still went under 50 mins which was my goal for the event. Didn't pay any attention to cadence, which was funny seeing how much effort I had put in at training to get around 90 per minute What would you do differently?: Maybe give myself a bit more energy to play with after the bike leg. ![]() Post race
Warm down: 10 mins of walking, lots to drink, some light stretches What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of energy on the run was the main area where I lost time, a winter of running building endurance and doing some tempo and speed work ahead. Some more work on open water swimming navigation would probably help Event comments: Loved it! My first Olympic Distance Triathlon which I completed faster than my goal time of 2 1/2 hours. I know I have to improve my run leg to be competitive in my age group but I have another year to work on that. Thanks to Sid and Malcolm for a great race. Also big thanks to the volunteers who make the event possible. Last updated: 2009-02-05 12:00 AM

Lots of fruit for breakfast, coffee and wholemeal toast around 6.30am. Got to transition around 7.45 and set up, caught up with a few mates and just acquainted myself with the entry and exit sones for each leg. Watched the Short Distance race. Had half a powerbar an hour before the race and a gel 20 mins before my wave
