Pre-race routine:

When I went to bed last night I didn't know if I wanted to do this race. But my eyes popped open at 6:50AM and I decided it was go time. My wonderful wife made me an egg sandwich and I headed off to the rec center.

The website said registration started at 8, but when I got there around 7:50 there were already tons of folks signed up. I'll get there earlier next month because the swim wave starts were based on when you signed up. It was pretty cool not having to fill out the USAT single race form as I'm now an official card carrying member!

I set up my transition area in the hallway down by the door and met up with my wife and in-laws to await the start.
Event warmup:

The pool had 8 lanes, 2 of which were warm-up lanes. The other six were divided into 2 so there were 12 lanes for the racers. Around the 1 hour mark the race director called my name and I hopped in the warm-up lane and did a halfhearted 200. I hadn't done long swims in awhile so I was a bit worried about not having enough bullets in the gun.

Swim
  • 18m 14s
  • 1000 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

I think the swim lessons are helping a lot. I got out of the water around the 18 min mark, which is the fastest race pace I've ever had. I tried to focus on good technique, and though my stroke fell apart in the middle of the swim, I think I got it back towards the end.

I was surprised at how easy the swim was for me, since I had been doing intervals of 25 for the majority of my training. Other than the moment I thought my lap counter had counted wrong (the number board read 1, 1, before turning to 3) I felt good during the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Snuck in a pull buoy?

My swim coach will probably be mad I went 1000 straight with some bad technique mixed in, but I think it went fairly well for me.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

The transition area was pretty low key, with spectators mingling in and out. My mother-in-law tried to get me DQ'ed by handing me a sock but I told her to drop it and stand back. Hope I wasn't too rude!

I put my t-shirt over my neck, put my socks and shoes on, grabbed my shades and forerunner and headed out. We had to walk everywhere from the moment we left the pool until we got out of the building, but I think I managed to get from the pool to the outside in under 3 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

I think the transition went smooth. I should get a tri top to avoid the trouble with putting on a shirt.
Run
  • 25m 38s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

(Time includes transition time)

The first lap was cold, windy, lonely, and muddy. I didn't see another racer until almost the end of the first lap. I had left my forerunner in bike mode, so I messed with that the first half mile and I was still out of breath from the swim for almost the entire first loop. Towards the end of the first loop there was a nice downhill that I used to get my breath back.

The 2nd loop was much better. I felt great and was holding a pretty decent pace (7:15ish).
What would you do differently?:

Put on the long sleeve Under Armour. It was cold out there. Also, practicing the swim-run transition would help, as it was hard to find my groove during that first mile.
Post race
Warm down:

All the bottled water was gone, but I grabbed some cookies and hit the water fountain. I took a quick shower and then headed out to breakfast with the family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I ran the Frostbite 5 Mile last weekend, and I can understand why folks don't recommend racing every weekend. I just felt that during the 5K I was missing a little of that race gear. I still had a good race, but I think I could've been a little faster if I didn't race last weekend. We will test this theory at the Splash & Dash next month.

Event comments:

A fun race! I'll do the next one in March and I'm sad I missed the first one in the series last month.
