Pre-race routine:

I woke up a 4:30AM and had my normal breakfast, took a shower and headed out.
Event warmup:

Arrived at the race site around 5:40AM. It was really cold when I arrived. Thankfully it warmed up when the sun came up. I got a pretty good rack spot and took my time to set everything up. I went on a short bike ride followed by a short run. I then put on my wetsuit and headed down to the beach to swim for a bit.
Swim
  • 25m 26s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was actually quite happy with my swim. This was my first race since last season and I improved my time considerably. I sighted extremely well and overall it felt great.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, thought it went well.
Transition 1
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

This was a terrible transition for me. My suit got somehow snagged on my timing chip and I fumbled with it for at least 30 seconds. I had to sit down to remove my suit. I lost a lot of time here.
What would you do differently?:

Not let my suit get snagged on my timing chip
Bike
  • 1h 01m 41s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 24.17 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt great on the bike. I did have a ghost shifting incident where I was hammering it pretty hard downhill and my chain jumped into my small ring. At first I thought I broke my chain. Thankfully I was able to get it back on the big ring and keep going.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I thought it went really well.
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

I still need to master the art of getting out of my shoes prior to dismount. It would save me a few seconds I guess. Overall transition went good.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to get out of my shoes while riding.
Run
  • 40m 56s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought I may have gone a little too hard on the bike as I started my run, but after about 2 miles I started to feel better. Overall I am happy. My goal was 40 minute flat and I came in just a bit more than that.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, maybe push harder at the end. And also swear more up the wood chip hill.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a little and got some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wetsuit incident.

Event comments:

I thought this was a fantastic race. It was very well organized and all the courses were great. The field was very competitive since it was the MN USAT National Championship Age Group Qaulifier. I will for sure be back next year.

Course: What a fun bike course. The course is pretty much all rolling hills. The only downside to the course is that cars are still allowed. However, only one car passed me so it was not a big deal. The volunteers did a great job controlling traffic.
