Swim
Comments: Started out thinking I had seeded myself too high, and that I might get in the way. Didn't get in the way, but I did hang onto the wall a lot. I was rattled a bit swimming in the lane with 5 other guys. Everyone was great, I just wasn't used to it. We seemed to be matched well enough in pace. I was the last one out of the pool on my wave. I was glad that I went down to use the pool Friday before the event. A 50 meter pool is a lot different than a 25 yard pool. If I had gone into it uninitiated it would have been more difficult. What would you do differently?: Seed myself correctly. Need to swim - a lot. Transition 1
Comments: Totally winded pulling myself out of the pool. Pushed myself to run to the transition area. Bike
Comments: Didn't push starting out because heart rate had not moderated from the swim. Was able to stay in the saddle climbing the first hill. Was able to hit speeds up to 30 mph on the descents. Momentum helped get up a couple ascents without slowing down too much. I rode the route the Sunday before. Glad I did because I've done all my training on a flat route. Wasn't even familiar with my gears. What would you do differently?: Climb more hills. Understand gearing and cadence. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was faster, simpler. Wasn't gassed like T1. What would you do differently?: Work on flying dismounts. Run
Comments: Are we there yet? The endurance aspect of the sport became a reality on the run. My legs were OK coming off the bike, but I didn't have a lot left in the tank. I needed to just take it slow and work on finishing. I got passed a lot. My race # was 61, and after I got passed by #189, I thought "OK this is a bit ridiculous." It was about that time my glutes started talking to me, like they'd had enough. So, I just kept plodding. When I came onto the track, for the final 300 yards the music was pumping and people were cheering. I found that I had enough left to kick it and at least finish (looking) strong. What would you do differently?: Need to train for distance as well as time. Post race
Warm down: Met my family at the finish line. Kissed my wife. She was glad that I finished without a drowning, a heart attack or an accident. What limited your ability to perform faster: I did not lay in a solid base of fitness as I was advised to do. I also realized that I need have distance goals as well as time goals. The speed will come if I do the time and the distance. Event comments: This is a great event for families and newbies. All the volunteers were great. Lots of support. Crowd encouraged everyone. There was plenty of food and everything ran on time. AA Sports puts on a good event. They just need more sponsors and more SWAG. Last updated: 2009-02-14 12:00 AM

Breakfast was a banana and a hard boiled egg. Ate a power bar about one hour before my swim wave.
Checked in early, about 6:30 and had lots of time to get organized and scope out the venue. Also, got into the rest rooms ahead of the crowds.
Stretched. Focused on shoulders, upper back, lats especially for the swim, as well as hamstrings and calves. I had worked more on stretching during my taper week, it made a difference.
