Pre-race routine:

Oatmeal, coffee, sport's drink... drive from hotel to the event. Arrived at 6:10AM. A little too late for my taste. I prefer a much larger pre-event window.
Event warmup:

A bit of swimming in the Gulf. Event was delayed 1/2 hr. due to fog. The fog never improved, however, and the director just opted to start. Kayakers didn't let anyone drown.
Swim
  • 10m 55s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Th Gulf is always too bouncy for me... even when it's relatively calm. I'm just one of those sensitive, motion sickness prone people. RPE on this swim was only at a 6 or 7 for me; hence, I believe that the course was either short or we had a current. My time shouldn't have been this fast as I'm a 13 minute 800 yd swimmer in the pool (without flip turns).
What would you do differently?:

Find feet! Remember to kick!
Transition 1
  • 04m 25s
Comments:

A .4 mile run on sand and through a lagoon to get back to transition. I stepped on something coming out of the water and really bruised my heel. Ouch! I still need to learn how to mount the bike with my shoes already in the clips. Overall, I good T time for me: 5/41 in my age group.
Bike
  • 26m 53s

  • 22.32 mile/hr
Comments:

An awesome bike for me. RPE was about an 8, so I could have probably dropped one more gear and pushed a bit harder.

There was drafting and blocking going on. I suppose this is unavoidable in a sprint event that has nearly 1000 people participating. There's just not enough time for riders to spread out well. Seems like the minute you pass someone, you are on someone else's behind, or somebody else is on yours.
What would you do differently?:

Drop one more gear and push harder. Have faith that my legs will be there for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

A fairly uneventful T2. I need to learn that fancy dismount stuff.
5/41 in my age group
What would you do differently?:

Fancy dismount! Leave running skirt home and just use race belt.
Run
  • 33m 5s
  • 3.6 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

3.6 mile run on mixed suraces

Only 1 drink station. Phooey!

I know that some people ran up those stairs, but I walked them. The run is always tough for me and I was not about to "run" up 45 stairs.

The sand!! I don't ever train on anything like this, so not only was this section of the run hard for me (and where I got passed more times than I would like to admit), but my calves are SCREAMING at me today.
What would you do differently?:

Train a bit more on sand. Increase overall run volume in general. Average run for me; however, a great imrpovement over last year when I factor in things like the stairs and sand!
Post race
Warm down:

Not a lick! I waited for Scott and Sondra to cross the line.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. This was a good season opener.

Event comments:

Awesome (and quite beautiful), challenging sprint tri course. Not a lot of volunteers and definitely short on water stations. C'mon folks, it's Florida. There should be water at every mile on the run course.
