Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30am, little extra snooze, really got up and into the car for a nap on the way to Madison. Probably should have gone to bed earlier. Ate a banana and a piece of toast with peanut butter before leaving the house. Made sure to take allergy meds since I was particularly stuffed up feeling. Stopped at Station 6 to use REAL restrooms before heading to Alliant (still wasn't enough though) which was convenient because W Badger was a much better route in than all the backed up off-ramps. Drank a lot of water (too much?).
Event warmup:

Found the girlfriend's running mates and lined up with them close to 2:00 pacer. It was a little chilly so I took a TINY jog toward the dog park and back and tried to stretch a little (not enough). Just before start, felt like I really need to use bathroom, but knew the lines were too long - hoped it would just be some extra motivation. Popped 2 shot bloks before race.

Comments:

My (probably slightly misguided) strategy was to stay with the 2:00 pacer for the 1st 5 miles and reevaluate how I was doing, since I knew I had trained between 9 and 10 minute miles but wasn't sure how fast I could sustain over 13 miles. Started out pretty good but was getting more tired than I expected by 6th mile and decided to slip back, knowing I had a 6 minute lead on 2:10 group (my minimal goal). Missed my girlfriend and her mom cheering at 2 of the 4 places they were planning to be. Took set of 2 more shot bloks at mile 7 and mile 11. Took gatorade 3 times, hit every other water station. By mile 8, I really needed to go, so I lost 2.5 minutes hitting another strategic bathroom since all the porta potties had too long lines. Felt better after. I could feel my pace slipping at this point. At mile 10, my left hip starting hurting, which had only happened one other time during training. This slowed me down more plus my stomach was cramping a little. 2:10 pacer caught me between mile 11 and 12 and I struggled to follow behind, had to walk through last water station and get a quick stretch. Tried to push last mile but struggled a bit. Ended up a little slower than I wanted.
What would you do differently?:

Not start out so fast and keep more even pace. Not eat so much the day before. Stretch more. Use restroom x2 or more before the race. Drink less on the way to race. Get more sleep.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water, had the obligatory Wisconsin dairy products (not so sure that was a good idea), tried to stretch, stretched hip and shins more, hobbled to car and went to have a bagel and coffee. Was going to hit Bratfest but it didn't work out (traffic didn't help).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pain in the left hip was the biggest problem (starting out so fast might have contributed), though need for bathroom break and havign eaten too much the day before so I had a slight stoamch cramp did not help.

Event comments:

I really would have preferred to do a sub 2:10, which I barely did if you ignore that bathroom break. But I am happy finishing my 1st half, just gives me more to shoot for in the future (maybe the new Madison Mini?). Definitely will not be trying to push 9 minute miles for Chicago.

Course: Not too bad, some of those hills were really long but none were killers. Fairly good number of water stations, I think they could have used one between mile 11 and 12 though. That last hill on Koster sucked but then it was a slight down and even into the finish. More porta potties!
