Pre-race routine:

Spent the night at my brothers apartment with the kids. His place is only 10 mins from race site but was kind of packed with the 6 of us in a 1 bedroom apartment.

Woke up at 4:30, loaded stuff in the truck and headed over to the race site.
Event warmup:

Swam a 50 during warmup, relized I had lost too much weight to swim with my current tri top as it was weighing me down during the practice swim. Sam was nice enough to run it down to my bike since I was early in the swim. Figured I would deal with it at T1.

Ate a powerbar and drank a bit of water, not much else.
Swim
  • 05m
  • 300 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was pretty nervous when I picked up my packet because I ended up with number 24 and this is seeded by swim times. Figured I was going to get run over.

Started off really fast for me, hard to just get out there and sprint a 300 without a warmup. Kept getting water in my goggles on the push off so had to stop at the end a few times to get the water out.

Ended up passing one person, felt like a really good swim for me.

The official times lump swim in with T1 but looked at my watch when I got out of the pool.
What would you do differently?:

Not much else, felt really good.
Transition 1

Comments:

Just really out of sorts in T1, not used to putting on a shirt in a race. All my stuff was on the wrong side of the rack.

Also includes coming down stairs that you had to walk.
What would you do differently?:

Test out my gear before race morning.
Bike

Comments:

First race out on my new bike. Yes I was the dork out there with aero-helmet, tri-bike w/wheelcover and powertap in a supersprint, but hey I can't run or swim as fast as the rest so I need all the help I can get : )

Took off out of the parking lot and couldn't get it into the big ring, I had been messing with the FD for a few days and it didn't have that problem before, I was worried that I was going to have to ride the whole course in the small ring. Shifted RD down a bit and was able to get into the Big Ring and took off.

Course goes through a few streets in Herndon then out on the W&OD trail. Since it was really early there wern't many people out on the course. Picked off a few people right away and more a long the way. Felt good on the bike. My plan was to ride as hard as I could and then some and run with what was left.

The bumps out on the trail were nasty, enough over one bridge that it knocked my stem lose and my aerobars were pointed down. Tried to pull them up and was riding praying landis for a bit, then finally hit another bump and was able to put them straight again, lol had visions of going over the handle bars but luckily it all held together.

The course is pretty flat but there are quite a few false flats where it seems you should be going 24+ but I was 18 and over 300 watts to keep it there so that ended up lowering my overall time.

Checking Pm, max watts 510, avg watts 212, not too bad but could be better.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, didn't leave too much out there, just need to work on pushing myself harder on the bike and don't get too lazy.
Transition 2

Comments:

LOL, 3rd overall, wish I could have done this in T1
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 16m 9s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs didn't get going until the 1/2 way point. I was happy with my time, faster than I have run any race prior. No one passed me which is good for me. Finished with all that I had left.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder. LOL, my best effort on the run only got me bottom 1/3rd. Just have to be patient, run will get faster, ran 10 min miles here last year so 2 min/mile improvement.
Post race
Warm down:

Relaxed and waited for Karla and Sam to finish. Rode our bikes back to Worldgate for awards, Bagels, etc.

Karla after a bit of confusion ended up 1st in her AG, Sam was 2nd and I ended up 3rd in mine, not too bad for a bunch of newbies.

40 or so seconds out of first in my AG, 1st and 2nd crushed me on the run so damn if I could get just a bit faster run.

Went out to breakfast and ate too much as always with the family, Karla and my brother and his GF.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Goal was to do this right below the puke line. Didn't puke but felt that I gave the best effort I had done in any tri to date.

Event comments:

This is a fun race, good warmup, long ride compared to the swim and bike. They had volunteers at every turn, police at every intersection so directions were not a problem. Awards was nice, bagels, banannas, OJ and some other stuff.

Really low turnout compared to last year I think. Not sure if he marketed this race at all as there wasn't much going on in NOVA so figured there should have been more people there.
