Run
Comments: This being my 1st PRR, I expected the start to be congested...on this I was right. Luckily I was up in time group 1A, so I didn't see any immediate walkers. I didn't want to waste too much energy bobbing and weaving, but a little was necessary to keep a decent pace going. Mile 1 Split: 7:51 After seeing a slow first mile I knew I needed to pick up the pace. The course was downhill this mile, so cruising a little faster felt easy. Mile 2 Split: 7:16 Mile 3 continued to be downhill (would love this as a 5k course) so kept cruising, though should've banked a little time in hindsight. Mile 3 Split: 7:03 Mile 4 started the section with rolling, and not so rolling hills. Mile 4 Split: 7:47 More o' the same. Mile 5 Split: 7:26 Time to pick it up! Mile 6 Split: 6:54 Too little too late! Last 1/2 to 3/4 mile I hammered as hard as I could. Was definitely ready for this one to be over. What would you do differently?: I probably could've pushed the pace a little earlier today. I was hoping to come in around 45 minutes, but I started too slow, had to weave around a bunch of people, and couldn't hold my pace on the hills. In my own defense, this is the 3rd race weekend in a row...although my legs felt great today. I've started adding more hill runs, so hopefully I'll continue to get stronger. Post race
Warm down: We had a long walk back to the car, so that combined w/ some stretching was my warm-down. What limited your ability to perform faster: Hills Event comments: You can't compare racing w/ 55,000 other people. Sure, it's tough to get a PR. But it's more about the experience. Was glad to finally see what this race is all about after growing up in Atlanta and hearing about it every year. I think it will become a 4th of July tradition from here on. Was staying w/ my wife's family up in Blue Ridge for the holiday, so we all got up extra early (3:30ish) to hit the road for the ATL. I ate some toast w/ peanut butter, had coffee, and showered before leaving.
Got off of Marta at Lenox about 7:00 for the 7:30 race start. It was slow going to the starting line. Hit the port o potties and was pretty disappointed in how long it took. I realize there are 50k people trying to go at the same time, but it took about 15 minutes to reach the front of the line. This gave me, oh, about 3 minutes to get warmed up and to my corral. So, my warm up consisted of some light stretching and joking w/ the guy next to me about our tardiness.
