Swim
Comments: Overall pleased with the swim. I only drifted out on one buoy, otherwise a pretty straight path, close to the buoys. I think I was rushing my stroke a bit, and could use some more training to really engrain the proper stroke pattern. Mostly breathing every other stroke vs. every 3rd. Only got behind someone's feet a few times for short periods. The cold didn't bother me, other than making my feet numb through at least a mile into the run. My pace felt fairly relaxed overall. What would you do differently?: Hope I can progress to being comfortable breathing every 3rd stroke, drafting better, and not rush my stroke. I think I can definitely push myself more on the swim, especially given the rest of my swims will be shorter courses. Transition 1
Comments: My first experience with wetsuit stripping. I still need to figure out an easier way to get the velcro undone to get my wetsuit down easier/quicker. No problem with getting my socks/shoes on and helmet/sunglasses. My rack spot was close to the swim/run exits, so I had a pretty long run with the bike to get out on the course. What would you do differently?: Nothing (but hope to get a better rack spot!). Actually, figure out a better way to undo the velcro at the back of my neck so I don't have to struggle as much. Bike
Comments: This is where I feel I had room for improvement! A bummer was that I got stuck in the big chain ring at about mile 3, and therefore ended up mashing a bit on some hills. Having not done adequate training (my longest ride yet was only 15m), I took it pretty easy so I didn't blow up on the run. Unfortunately I think I really cost myself some time and blew my goal of under 3hrs that I set at the beginning of the season. Oh well. I was surprised that this was my weakest event (by ranking) vs. my best in my last tri. Drank a (big) bottle of cran-razz Clif and bottle of water. Ate a package of honey stinger chews. What would you do differently?: Step it up!!! Transition 2
Comments: This went well except getting stuck behind a guy who wanted to walk his bike down our aisle rather than run. And, I spent the time getting my number belt on, rather than just doing that while I was running. What would you do differently?: put the number on under the wetsuit or while running to save a few seconds. Run
Comments: I was pleasantly surprised with my pace in the first mile and overall. I was super lucky to have really nice guy who was near me throughout the bike come up to me at mile 4 and pace me in the rest of the way. He provided a lot of encouragement and motivation, and stuck with me even though I'm sure his legs still had some more kick left in them! There's no way I would have maintained the pace the last couple of miles without him. THANKS OWEN!! I didn't realize we'd run along the beach at the end... my legs didn't really appreciate that. I took in 1/2 energy pack, ~3 waters and 1 gatorade. What would you do differently?: nothing. Pleasantly surprised here since I've only done 1-2 runs >/= 6m since the half marathon in Feb Post race
Warm down: eating, stretching, and standing in the cold water up to my waist What limited your ability to perform faster: Being a rookie, and holding back on the swim/bike in fear of imploding on the run. Esp the bike. I was also very lucky in that my nutrition worked out great (no practice with that). Event comments: What a great time and great organization throughout! I'll be back... Breakfast of waffles, PB, banana, & syrup w/ iced coffee about 2 hrs before race - but I was so nervous it was hard to get it down. Sipped on some gatorade and water (~ 8 oz ea) in pre-race hrs. Got into transition about 6am (1.5hrs before race start), so I had plenty of time to get thing set-up and nerves started to settle down once I had everything in order. Ate 3/4 pkg of honey stinger chews ~ 20' before start.
Just a few minutes of jogging around 6:40, and then just stuck my feet in the water to try to get them to acclimate before the swim.
