Swim
Comments: The swim was pretty much right on where I wanted it to be. Set up the swim order for our lane. First 200 were a little quick, and when I slowed the guy behind me passed. No flip-turns for me. They eat up too much of my energy. My turns weren't as good as they could have been, but I don't think they cost me more than a second or three. What would you do differently?: Practice flip-turns, or get better at an alternative turn. Transition 1
Comments: Struggled a little bit with getting socks on and straight, but the rest of the transition was fine. Jumped on the bike and got going. The problem came when I went to put my feet in my shoes. The sock on my right foot got caught on the velcro and pulled part way off my foot. So I reached down, pulled the sock off and threw it in the road. Then I struggled putting a still drying foot into my shoe. Left foot went a bit better, but wasn't great. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Practice transitions more, I suppose. Bike
Comments: After I got my shoes on, the bike went fine. I feel like I could have probably pushed a little harder, but I was a little concerned about not having enough left for the run. I passed as many as passed me in my heat and I passed a few from the previous heat. Ate a gel about half-way through the bike. What would you do differently?: Wear a sock on my right foot. Transition 2
Comments: This transition felt slow, though it was probably a top 10 transition time looking at the results. Sipped my water one time. Struggled a little bit with my shoes as the tongues slid down a ways when I pulled them on. Not bad, though. What would you do differently?: Practice those transitions! Run
Comments: Felt surprisingly good on the run. Belched a bunch after a few hundred yards and that made me feel better. Again, I felt like I might have been able to push a little harder but like on the bike, I was worried about running out of steam. Was passed by one person, but passed quite a few others, some of which I am pretty sure were in my heat. Kept a pretty steady pace over two miles. Picked up the pace the last third of a mile and then again the last 100 or so to pass a couple others. Very happy with my run. This run was so much better than last year and the year before. What would you do differently?: Maybe push myself just a little more. Post race
Warm down: Didn't collapse this time. Actually felt pretty good after a couple minutes. Big hug from Sarah (that's one of the best parts of finishing a race).Should have stretched. Ate some orange wedges and drank a bunch of water. Showered and went to the awards presentation. Beer and burgers after everything was over. What limited your ability to perform faster: I know I could have trained better and smarter, but despite that I am very happy with my result. Event comments: I love this race. It is well organized. There are plenty of volunteers. I'm sure I'll be back. Last updated: 2009-02-27 12:00 AM

Motel in Alexandria. Got up at 6am and loaded the car. Coffee. Then to the school to set up the transition area. I was surprised to see probably 15 bikes already in the racks. Still got a place pretty close to the in/out. Visited with Dave, Steve, and others. Ate a peanut butter sandwich, banana, and a clif bar with a couple hours to go before my start. Milled about with nervous energy.
About 20-30 minutes before my heat started, I jogged inside, ran some stairs, and stretched. Ate a gel about 15 minutes before we started. Got swimming order sorted out and did 100 in the pool before the start. Felt pretty good, but was a little concerned about my back as I went to the chiropractor on Friday.
