Run
Comments: Started off in Corral 2, probably a little farther back than we should have for our planned pace. Spent a lot of time passing people at the start - where I wanted to take full advantage of the downhills. We ended up a little fast for the first few miles, but nothing that should have thrown me off too much (again - downhills). By mile three I knew this wasn't going to happen - my breathing was out of control. My big mistake here was immediately correlating that to an asthma test I had coming up during the week - I "knew" this meant I was going to fail the test and not be able to scuba dive. So - not only was I not going to be able to sustain the pace I wanted, I brought in an outside issue that had nothing to do with this race. My attitude for the rest of the race was horrible - which made things even worse. I knew I was not helping myself, but I couldn't get out of my head and just run today. By mile 7-8, I started having severe pain on the outside of my right foot - what is this?! Actually stopped, sat down, and Kirk massaged (painfully) my foot to try to loosen things up. It worked pretty well, foot pain dropped to a dull ache, but then my right inside knee started to hurt. It was a sharp pain - as if someone was stabbing me with a knife and twisting it. The run turned into a walk until the knee stops hurting - run as long as I can stand the pain for the rest of the race. Poor Kirk, it was no fun at all! Would I have had a better race if I hadn't had focus issues - I don't know. I'm pretty sure the knee/foot issues would have surfaced either way, but it probably wouldn't have been as bad. What would you do differently?: Get out of my head - only focus on the race. I think I put too much pressure on myself to hit my time goal, but didn't really have a secondary goal to fall back on. Post race
Warm down: Switched into dry clothes, stretched, sat in a warm hotel to try to stop shivering. I loved the temperature for running, but it was otherwise way too cold. :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Myself - mental focus and knee/foot pain. Event comments: Still some issues they need to work out for this race. Bag check was chaos and directions/signs pointing to the corrals. Otherwise this is a good race, one that I will continue to do each year. Last updated: 2009-03-01 12:00 AM

Normal PBJ Waffle and Green Tea pre-race. Drive down to parking near the park and walk to drop-off our bags. This was extremely disorganized with only scattered volunteers. After dropping off my bag, a volunteer in another tent explained that I didn't put my bag in the right spot, but I couldn't find it when I went back. I was stressed that someone had taken my stuff - since there was no security at all around the bags. I wasted energy worrying about this - which is basically the story of this race (wasted energy).
Light stretching - that's it!
