Total Time = 2h 45m 31s
Overall Rank = 371/2604
Age Group = m30-34
Age Group Rank = 46/281
Pre-race routine:

ride down lynch with 30lbs of gear on my back...
Event warmup:

put on wetsuit, it was pretty hot, got in for a quick swim before the wave started
Swim
  • 27m 15s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim start was nowhere near as bad as I feared (this was my first Wildflower, and first Olympic distance tri) after having seen the videos, the start at the vineman showdown a few weeks ago was much worse. Barely bumped anyone, got into my stride after rounding the first buoy and felt comfortable the whole way, held back a little knowing what was coming up, got a pretty bad cramp in my left quad as I stood up to exit the water.
What would you do differently?:

Probably swim a little harder, but generally I swam within my ability.
Transition 1
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

run up to T1 is long, so I'm not unhappy with my T1 time
Bike
  • 1h 19m 57s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.65 mile/hr
Comments:

I am significantly stronger on the bike than I am the swim or run, so pushed harder than I probably should have, I also drank about 1/2 as much as I should (which almost resulted in me bonking on the run), had some twitches in the hamstrings and quads that made me nervous that I would cramp up when I was done, but was very happy with a #23 bike split
What would you do differently?:

probably not go quite as hard, and drink a lot more during the first half of the bike, am thinking a new hydration system that makes drinking easier is in order (aerodrink rather than a bottle cage)
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Good T2, was a little nervous about the upcoming run after pushing hard on the bike
Run
  • 53m 14s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

see above, tough run, felt like I was going to cramp up any minute, but kept plodding along, knowing I had a good swim and bike leg taken care of already. Dusty, hilly trails for a good part of the run, the downhill into the finish is deceptively long (even though you have already ridden up and down it several times)
What would you do differently?:

need to fix the leg and run a lot more
Post race
Warm down:

was hurting pretty bad after I finished, sat down and drank 3-4 bottles of gatorade and water, went down and soaked in the lake and started feeling human again

What limited your ability to perform faster:

run training

Event comments:

had an amazing time at wildflower, I'll be back for sure

Course: this is flat out a tough 25 mile ride, it's also a fantastic course, so while it was tough on the legs, it was a beautiful ride with some challenging climbing (lynch is just not as tough as it's made out to be) and some nice decents along the way

Course: wow...this was a tough run, I was prepared for the swim and bike but not for the run, have been training on a shin injury for a few months so have done much of my run training on soft, flat ground or an elliptical and it showed here, was anticipating running 7:30-8 minute miles and was around 8:34 (and that is after picking it up during the second half, am guessing I ran 10 minutes for my first mile)
