Age Group Rank = 11/24
Pre-race routine:

pick up race packet day before race. download and study run and bike course; familiarize self with transition area - in and out; set up transition area; practice undressing for transition (day prior); visualize the steps at each transition; TOOK 2 ASPIRIN ONE HOUR BEFORE RACE STARTED. Had a travel mug of hot tea and slices of banana bread 1.5 - 2 hours before start of race.
Event warmup:

go to bathroom (twice); listen to race updates; walk transition area; observe chalkline for dismount/mount; walk to starting gate; have picture taken; run short block; games on!!

NOTE: race is backwards -- RUN - - - BIKE -- - -then SWIM ! ! !
Swim
  • 09m 25s
  • 250 yards
  • 03m 46s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

I would run faster from transition and get in pool faster. I would swim towards left hand side of ropes. I would swim THROUGH the middle of the lane to get ahead instead of waiting for spot to clear or go around the side. I would focus hard at the end on my breathing (I had ONE gasp for breathe moment).
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

because this race was backwards, the transition was actually from the run to the bike - -my only change was to exchange a ball cap for my bike helmet and glasses - no shoe change required - using hybrid bike. Excellent racking of bike (bike seat over rail at end position), I was positioned to drop the seat and run forward to the mounting line with my bike.
What would you do differently?:

I would cover the glasses and helmet with plastic if raining to keep them dry - -my glasses were wet inside and out, I couldn't see through them well and had to look over the top until I could wipe them clean - -it was raining so it didn't really help that much - - for the short distance, I may have been better without glasses.
Bike
  • 18m 35s
  • 4 miles
  • 12.91 mile/hr
Comments:

Cadence was steady and even, shifting gears was good, managed U-turns effectively, no problems passing within 15 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

The ride itself was very good, pleased with performance, good pacing, maybe a little conservative, but excellent for first time, played leap frog with a guy who fell back after the 2nd time not to return.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

transition from bike to swim was excellent - -race volunteer congratulated me on excellent transition (coming back from bike and heading into swim). Ran with bike to rack and found my space taken up - had to slide other bikes over and then couldn't get my bike seat on rack - handle bars kept colliding with rail ends and bike already on rack - - owner of other bike helped get mine on the rack.
What would you do differently?:

I would run while putting in ear plugs (didn't want to this time, wanted to make sure I didn't lose them) - -I would run faster from bike rack to pool area - - I took extra time to put on bathing cap and ear plugs - -could have done that on the REQUIRED walk to the pool. Googles fogged up upon entering pool area (due to temperature change) - - - Adrian said to rinse them quickly in the water as soon as I jump in.
Run
  • 14m 8s
  • 1.4 miles
  • 10m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

cold and rainy - - -maybe should have warmed up a little more. Started to feel good after 1/4 mile into the run - found my pace and held it steady. Started strong, leveled out and stayed on pace.
What would you do differently?:

warm up a little more - - push my pace faster - - I was pretty relaxed coming into the end - -however, as planned to save up energy for next 2 events.
Post race
Warm down:

food and water available - - took water - - room temperature - -did not like drinking - - tried animal crackers - yuck! stuck to my throat. after catching my breath from the swim - - - only took a few minutes, I was fine and exilarated! I felt awesome!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not knowing how much energy I should conserve to finish all 3 events.

Event comments:

Excellent first time event! Lot's of encouragement from volunteers as well as other participants. Good experience to see how well my training transferred to the race day itself. Although it was drizzley throughout the entire event - - it was actually comfortable during the race.
