Swim
Comments: Combat swim! I had trained for the OWS for a couple of weeks but was not prepared for the sheer number of people banging into me for the first 250 yds. Of the 98 people that finished ahead of me, only 10 had swims over 12 minutes. I clearly need to work on my swim! My goal was 12 minutes and I failed. What would you do differently?: I've got to take a swim class. If I was a bit faster maybe I wouldn't be caught in the giant pack trying to drown each other. Transition 1
Comments: I had practiced this T1 several times, I just didn't do it when I was that tired. Standing up trying to put my socks on was almost impossible. I managed and actually finished with a ranking of 55 on the T1...so I guess it was better than expected. I didn't wear a wetsuit on the swim so maybe this sped things up a bit. What would you do differently?: Don't wear socks? I'll have to train for this but it may be possible. I don't think I'm quite ready to jump into the shoes on the bike. Bike
Comments: Bike was my strong point. I felt great until the last 1/2 mile which had a slight hill. Since I had passed quite a few people, I didn't want to give up any of that time so I pushed really hard at the end, passing a few more but completely taking everything out of my legs. What would you do differently?: Of course I now have bike envy, thinking that aero bars, new bike, etc will make me faster....better just stick to training harder and more often! Transition 2
Comments: This was another fast transition, ranked 45 on this one. Felt good about the T2...until I started the run! I had hoped for less than 2 minutes total for both T1 and T2...I missed it by 6 seconds. What would you do differently?: Fast laces, maybe no socks. Hard to complain about the time because I had a long run to the end of the transition area before I racked the bike. 0:48 seems pretty good. Run
Comments: Actually thought I might not make during the first 1/4 mile of the run...I felt like I had nothing left after the final portion of the bike. Couldn't drink at the aid station because I was sucking wind so hard. Not until the 1/2 way point did I find my stride. My goal was to finish under 28 mins and I just made it. What would you do differently?: Do more bricks! Simple enough...ride harder in training and then jump off and start running. More bricks, more bricks, more bricks! Post race
Warm down: Walked around in awe of the fact that I am a triathlete. Less than five months ago I weighed over 270 lbs and couldn't run a minute without stopping. Today I became a triathlete. I hope I never warm down! What limited your ability to perform faster: Just need more training, a little more weight loss and practice. Event comments: The whole thing was a wonderful experience. I'm completely hooked. Can't wait until the same race next year. Last updated: 2009-03-05 12:00 AM

Got up at 4:45 am, ate my standard whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter, honey and banana. Drank two glasses of water. Headed to the race site which was about 40 minutes away.
Ran for a bit and then swam right before the start.
