Swim
Comments: People had complained that in previous races there was the taste/smell of diesel fuel from the boats, but I did not encounter that in this race, my first time doing this race. Also, I did not see any boats that were active. All in all, I thought the course was just fine. Watch rocks on the beach when you exit. What would you do differently?: Need to practice swimming more in the pool. Really haven't been doing any swim training except in Open water. Transition 1
Comments: Depending on which wave you are in, you can be REALLY far away from where you exit the water. That was my case. So, just be prepared for a long run to your bike on exiting the water. Very happy overall with my transition. Left foot did unclip shoe before foot was fully in the shoe, but I was able to hold it on and get foot in without shoe falling on ground. What would you do differently?: Work on putting on bike helmet while getting wetsuit off. Bike
Comments: Great course for strong bikers because of the hills. Definitely do hill repeats, or ride hills before this race and you will be happy with the results. What would you do differently?: Would have pushed more on all hills. Was a bit conservative until starting into the 2nd lap. Should have gotten out of the saddle on all the hills. VERY happy overall with my time! Was not certain if I could avg 20 mph or better on a hilly course, but I did. Transition 2
Comments: Had a decently long run with bike to transition area, so took helmet off while running to transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Each split seemed to get about a second faster, which very happy with as I tend to start TOO fast, then slow a bit. About .75 to 1 mile from end, spotting a girl ahead possibly in my AG, but just kept my steady, strong pace going and I kept closing on her. About half a mile from finish I was right on her heals and a guy yelled "Go 992 and 994", well she was 992 and I was 994! She hit it hard and I just couldn't keep up. Overall my run time was faster, she just had more juice at the end to beat me. It was Raja from the club. If that guy hadn't yelled, I would have tailed her to near the finish then hopefully been able to out kick the last 100 yds. I thought I could do sub 7:45 pace and very happy that I did. What would you do differently?: Train more. Not doing enough speed work as I keep running with the dogs. Post race
Warm down: Drank Mimosa's with Mio, Heather and Mike! Mike did make it to the finish. Chatted, stretched, sat, and just waited for Mio to get her AG award. 3rd place in her first tri ever in the sprint distance! What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training and motivation this year. Just kind of a laissez-faire attitude this year. Drop some weight. Event comments: I give it a 4 instead of a 5 because the logistics are kind of a pain in the butt. You have to drop your bike off the night before, then because it is a point to point race, you have to take the shuttle (which does NOT run enough) back to the start or try to figure out another way to get back there. Would recommend just running back, actually. Good, tough course because of the bike. Pretty good post race activities with beer garden (which I unfortunately did not partake) and a band. Alarm went off at 4am. Dressed, fed cats, let dogs out, the usual. Had two cups of coffee and ate my standard raisin bagel, with soy nut butter and honey. Checked work and personal email. Re-verified I had all my stuff. Left house at 5:10am to pick up Mio at 5:15am. Brought bike pump as bikes are dropped off the night before, shared it with Mio and Shelby. Set up transition area and verified how Mio's transition area was set up (her first tri).
10-15 minutes of running with some dynamic stretching and strides. Ran with Mio. 10 minutes of swimming and wading in the water for the start. Put wetsuit on about 25 mins before my wavestarted, and in the water about 15-20 mins before my wave start.
