Pre-race routine:

Had a small cup of cereal and soy milk with protein mixed in about 2:15 before the race. Had a cup of strong coffee from the coffee press about 1:20 before the race. Hydrated throughout the morning.
Event warmup:

It was kind of chilly until the sun came out, so after registration I alternated between sitting in my car with the heater and seat warmer on full blast, and getting out to stretch and jog around. About 10 minutes before the start I made my way to the starting line and kept warming up/stretching there.

Comments:

I positioned myself at the starting line just behind the lead group. The first mile I ran slow to ensure my hamstring could get warmed up. First mile split was about 7:06. Increased speed slightly in mile 2, but was still cautious because of the hammy, and split was 6:58. Mile 3 I basically held the pace and passed the remaining runners which were in sight of me. Mile 3 split was right about 7:04. The last mile I tried to increase speed but my hammy was just too tight. Finished with a 7:02 for mile 4. Still had plenty of energy at the end, even though this was actually my longest run of the year so far.

My biggest concern, as one can see from my log this past week, was my right hamstring. There were a couple times in the first mile I felt it twinge and considered dropping out, but it finally warmed up and was "functional" although it never really felt good during the entire race. After I passed mile 3 around 21:00, I thought, "ok, now I can kick it up." As soon as I increased my pace, though, I felt another twinge in my hamstring and realized 7:00/mile was all the hammy would allow today. I am glad I was able to finish with a decent time, but it is also good to know I had the potential for a much faster time had I been healthy.
What would you do differently?:

I think my tactics, form, breathing, etc. were all pretty good. Everything was great except for my hamstring.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and stretched. Also got a massage for both hamstrings.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Right hamstring was tight/sore. Could not run much faster than 7:00/mile pace without problems.

Event comments:

This was a fun race and very well organized. There was free pizza and beer after the race, and nice plaques for the winners. I passed on the beer, but did enjoy a small piece of pizza (first pizza since November!). The race is also for a great charitable cause. I definitely hope to do the race next year.
