Swim
Comments: I know I'm not a good swimmer, but this was my best, most comfortable race swim ever (even though I decided not to wear the wet suit). I felt I was nice and steady for the whole swim, and actually swam fairly straight. This was enough of a confidence booster that I'm going to start thinking less about surviving and more about racing these swims. What would you do differently?: Pick it up and go a little faster for the back half of the swim. Transition 1
Comments: Average tranition. Since I swam without the wet suit, I didn't wear a shirt and put one on in T1. The one I wore was loose, so it went on easy. What would you do differently?: Take a Tri Top to the pool and see if I notice much drag from it. If not, swim in a shirt so I don't have to mess with one in T1. Bike
Comments: Good ride for me. Fairly steady pacing. My goal as to average 20+, so I was pretty happy with this. First race I've averaged over 20. Last year I was around 18. I was a little irritated near the end of the race when I got passed by a 4-person pace line of 25-29 year old guys. Give me a break! I didn't say anything as they passed me because I didn't realize they were in a pace line until they got a ways ahead of me and were still grouped so tight. What would you do differently?: Nothing, except maybe say something to the pace line guys. For whatever reason, that really bugged me. Good ride for me! Transition 2
What would you do differently?: Nicve smooth transition. No changes! Run
Comments: Good first mile, then slowed down to a comfortable pace. Still, I think I did more passing than getting passed. What would you do differently?: I think a watch or the Garmin would have helped me pace a little better and have faster miles 2 & 3. Still, my run target was 25-minutes, so, ev3en though this didn't feel like a fast race, I'm happy with the results. BIG IMPROVEMENT OVER LAST YEAR! Post race
Warm down: Nothing much, walked around with Kelli and talked with some of the neighbors and freinds we saw. What limited your ability to perform faster: I'm in week 3 of IM LOU training, and didn't adjust training or taper for this race. I think with a little taper, my run could have been quite a bit faster. The goal time I was shooting for was 1:25, so I'm very pleased with my results. Event comments: Good sprint race, with a lot of first time racers. Great venue to learn the routine of racing tri's. Last updated: 2009-03-09 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:00. Showered and had a gel and couple cups of coffee for breakfast. Got to the park around 6:25. Took about 10 minutes to get marked and set up transition. Pre-Race, everything was well organized and lines (expect port-a-pottie) were short and fast.
This race marked my official 1-year anniversary in triathlon. This was the first race I did last year (my rookie year), so I was anxious to do it this year and use it as a measure of improvement.
The walk from parking to the park was about 1/2-mile, so maybe that was a little bit of a warm-up. In addition, I got in the water and swam for about 45-seconds. This is the first race I've taken a few strokes before the swim, and I now HIGHLY recommend it. Just those few seconds really seemed to calm my jitters and let me start swimming strong (for me) from the git-go.
