Swim
Comments: Lined up right in front. Had a lot of fast swimmers in this swim - Ally, Mike Orton (Pro-ITU triathlete), Matias, Steve (ex all-american swimmer), etc, etc. Jumped out quick to start but realized that Mike had really really surged hard right away and I needed to jump on his feet or I was going to get left. Steve, Mike and I broke free from the pack. Mike was throwing some pretty big surges so I went with him. Eventually Steve took the lead and Mike and I dropped in behind him. About 3/4 of swim in I was feeling good and surged up to second and sat there for the rest of the swim. I had never really swam with anyone who did this before (massive surges) but it was fun and did not toast me at all and I felt good coming out of water. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Got in the lead pack is what I wanted to do. Transition 1
Comments: Thought I had a quick T1 (5th OA) but Mike and Matias still put a lot of time into me here. What would you do differently?: Not sure what I could have done differently. Bike
Comments: Tied for first OA. Coming into this I knew that Matias, who won the Chicago tri, and Mike were going to give me all sorts of competition. I was hoping to have a 1 minute lead on Matias out of the water but as I was mounting the bike, I saw him coming up behind me. Crap. Jumped on the bike and passed Mike within the first mile but Matias passed me 3-4 miles in. I stuck with him and by mile 6 I was feeling good and repassed him. He passed me back on the second lap and I passed him for good later that loop. At the start of the third lap I jumped on it and started hammering it. Watts were up over 300 this entire portion. Saw lots of my teammates racing and volunteering. It was AWESOME! Came into T2 and realized that I was in first. I was beyond shocked. Avg Pwr: 301 L/R: 50/50 PE: 19 What would you do differently?: Nothing - my best ride to date. Watts were way up compared to any other race. Transition 2
Comments: Solid. 6th OA. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Started out feeling good. I knew going into this race that Mike and Matias were going to crush me on the run. These two are just in a different class then I run (they run 31-32 minute open 10Ks). Matias came flying be me about a mile or two into the run - he was being his normal fun self - making faces for the cameras, etc. Great to race with someone who obviously enjoys the sport. :) At the turn around I saw Mike, followed closely by Cascio and a minute later Brady. These guys are all a lot of faster than me and I was just trying to hold on. With about a mile out Mike came by me...and when I say came by me I mean flew by me. It is cool to see someone that fast in person. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Raced as hard as I could. Post race
Warm down: Talked with everyone, had some food, then it was FeXY party. A great day. What limited your ability to perform faster: More run training needed. Event comments: One of the best run, most fun races out there. This is the 26th year the race has been run and it shows - organized, great volunteers, good course. Last updated: 2009-03-09 12:00 AM
