Swim
Comments: Until I get to be a better long distance swimmer, I will continue to struggle with the first leg of any swim. Between getting clobbered and just trying to joust for position, it remains a difficult thing for me. Once I was able to clear the crowd (or the crowd got ahead of me...) and find a nice pace. I really tried to focus on stroke, full range of motion and rotation and towards the end, it paid off. I didn't have to stop and breaststroke or anything like that. I was able to swim the whole course! What would you do differently?: I wasn't able to focus as much for this race as I was for the Pewaukee Tri. Between the recovery time from the Pewaukee race combined with the calf problems I was having all week, I will probably not schedule two triathlons within two weeks of each other. Transition 1
Comments: I wasn't dizzy coming into the T1 but I wasn't necessarily ready to hop on my bike either. I setup my shoes with the velcro off and that seemed to be a easier than having to undo the straps and take the time to put them on. What would you do differently?: MOVE QUICKER! Bike
Comments: The first half of the course was a tough one. I struggled just to hold 15 mph and my quads were screaming at me the entire time. I tried to get a higher cadence with minimal "push" power but my HR was spiking - making me even more tired. I had to shift my gear usage to the "third step" (the larger front cog) and slow my cadence down and power through. Once I got comfortable with my gears, I was able to step it up to 17 - 22 MPH. What would you do differently?: My prerace routine always includes a protein shake. I usually leave about 1/8th of the protein mix in the bottle, throw in some water and a ZYM tablet. This time around, I left 1/2 the bottle of protein and filled in the rest with water and ZYM. This made it EXTREMELY hard to get hydrated because I felt FULL (on the verge of yaking) the entire bike. Next time... CUT THE PROTEIN! Transition 2
Comments: My hip flexors were a bit tight to getting to my rack was a bit tough. Running shoes and hat were right there. Also, as I was adjusting my race belt, my race number BROKE so I had to walk while I was fixing it. What would you do differently?: Again, I forgot my sunglasses. Bring them next time. Run
Comments: The run went well. I pushed through the hip flexor struggles and they were able to finally loosen up. I held a nice pace for most of the race, had to stop once or twice for a few seconds. What would you do differently?: I wasn't able to prepare as much as I would have wanted because of the calf and Achilles pain I had all week. More training next time around. I can usually run a nice 11 - 12 min pace and I kind of lagged on it. Post race
Warm down: Walking and talking to my boss... walking some more and talking to some Donks... walking and stretching and talking to some Tri Wis peeps. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training the week before. Need better planning Event comments: Drink stations were at .75 miles and 2.27 miles. I'm not necessarily saying I would have taken the gatorade but I would have liked the water to splash on my head. Last updated: 2009-03-12 12:00 AM

Overall Rank = 271/440

Age Group Rank = 13/16
Typical protein shake, no radio and thinking about the course on the drive there.
Warmup was cut short because it TOOK FOREVER to park. I got in a nice run to get my HR up there and hopped in the lake for a 100M swim.
