Total Time = 2h 36m 32s
Overall Rank = 92/341
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 17/37
Pre-race routine:

Night Before: 30 mins of yoga, some reading. I literally slept 20 mins. "Woke-up" had PB and oatmeal along with a banana, bottle of water. Arrived at transition setup and had a cliff bar 90 mins prior to the swim. Chugged another bottle of water.
Event warmup:

Approx 600 yards of running, some arm circles. It was warm, no real reason for a warmup.
Swim
  • 25m 29s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

Did fairly well on the swim, managed to draft off of the FOP guys for a solid 100-150 meters before drifting back. Looking at the top times there is no way I would have been able to hang. I alternated breathing from bilateral to one-sided but focused on rolling my body. Overall, great swim and a new PR for the swim portion!
What would you do differently?:

Draft a bit better.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Wow, 300 meters is FAR when you've just swam 1.5k. The transition from the swim to the bike, as you may have guessed, was 300 meters. I started running hard but slowed down so I could get my HR down. quickly put on my helmet and shades and took off. Did a successful (yay) running mount and got up to speed reasonably quickly.
What would you do differently?:

run harder i guess but I need to figure out how to get my HR down before I can do that.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 35s
  • 39 kms
  • 32.24 km/hr
Comments:

I was told this was going to be a hilly course. I read the 'course elevation profile' and recognized that there were a lot of climbs in this course. Still, I was unprepared for the number of climbs and the length of some on this course. Granted, my time was okay and I train on very, very few hills here in NJ. I think if I train harder on hills I would be able to significantly reduce my time.

As far as nutrition goes, I finished 1 24oz bottle of accelerade, 1 24 oz bottle of water and had a cliff shot energy gel. I made certain that i finished my fluids as I knew the run would be HOT. The downhills were quite lovely, unfortunately they did not run into a nice flat section but instead into a direct uphill, so the benefit was fairly small (although hitting 40mph on one section was sweet).

Overall, i was happy with my bike, although I was passed by a lot of riders on the course (stupid fancy tri bikes and giant quads/calves).
What would you do differently?:

Train on hills
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Pretty decent T2. The running dismount was successful as I practice every time I come home from a ride. I wore socks so that slowed me down a bit. Took me a while to get both socks on although the shoes slid on effortlessly.
What would you do differently?:

I would like to start running w/o socks. I would knock 30 seconds off of T2.
Run
  • 54m 56s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, with only running 10 miles a week for the past few weeks and recovering from shin splints I'd say I had a strong run. I had to stop to water the plants at about the 1.2 mile mark. Grabbed water from each aid station to stay hydrated. Felt pretty decent running up the hills and felt even better going downhill. Took short quick steps and leaned into the uphill which helped in powering me through to the turnaround. I tried to kick with the last mile but had no kick. Finished strong and kept my form.
What would you do differently?:

train for the run
Post race
Warm down:

parents brought ice-cold water and watermelon. some light stretching We went to the triathlete lunch, which was crap. Cookies (not good), chicken sandwich (not good), fruit (good) and soda or water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of run and hill training. overall felt like this was a great race and actually matched my time from last year on an easier course.

Event comments:

Although I was very disappointed in the food (compared to NJ State this year, which was good) and the lack of water available pre-race, I do enjoy the events cgi puts on. Very organized, always on-time and a good competitive field. Parking was a bit confusing and I had a rather upset local ask me if the race directors "instructed us to park here because church was a nightmare." Of course at 530am, I, nor the other participants realized we parked in a church parking lot, which isn't the best place to park on a sunday.
