Swim
Comments: The water was way too warm for my liking. My left calf cramped immediately on entry into the pool. It was my first swim of the year. That was a really poor choice and my time reflects the cramp and lack of training. What would you do differently?: Actually swim sometime in the last 3 months. Jump out rather than straight up and down on entry to save a little time. Learn to kickflip under the lane lines. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was the transition from run to bike. It was pretty basic. Kick off the running shoes, slip on bike shoes and helmet and head out with the bike. What would you do differently?: I suppose I should learn a flying mount so I don't have to stop to get on my bike. Other than that, I was pretty happy with my transition. Bike
Comments: The course was 3 5K loops. The first half was slightly uphill and the last half was slightly downhill, but all in all, it was pretty flat. It was very crowded by the time I got on the bike because I run so slow. In all, I put in a pretty disappointing bike split. I think I was distracted by the other riders a bit more than I should have been and I didn't push nearly hard enough of the downhill section. What would you do differently?: If I do this race next year, I will push much harder, especially on the downhill section. There is no real reason to save anything for the swim, so I should have given the bike everything I had. Transition 2
Comments: This was just racking the bike, taking off socks, shoes and helmet and running to the pool. The path was a mix of grass, gravel and dirt. I had scoped it before the race so I knew what was coming. Not nearly as bad as a dirty transition area after a swim in a regular tri, so no real complaints from me. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: The run time seems really slow. I am hoping it includes transition time because I felt like I but in a better effort than that. Next time I will bring a watch so I can time my own splits. What would you do differently?: Other than simply improving my running speed, I would bring a watch so I can pace myself. Post race
Warm down: Dried off, put jeans on over my tri suit and packed up to go. What limited your ability to perform faster: Treating it all more like a race and less like a workout. Event comments: In all I had a good time. I could have left a lot more out on the course and probably should have, but it was the first tri this year, so as much as anything it was a good gauge of what the off season had done to me. Time to get back into shape. As far as the race went, it was wonderfully organized and on time. I would definitely recommend it to those looking for a good sprint and will likely go back next year. Got up around 4:30 and had a bagel and some coffee then drove to the race. Got there around 6:45 and setup my transition area.
A little walking and stretching. Meander around so I new where to head into and out of transition. Nothing special.
