Swim
Comments: Got in the water towards the back, still undecided as to what my plan was. Decided to drift over to the left and towards the front because I've been doing a lot of swim training and felt ok with the whole OWS thing. Went off at a steady pace, everthing felt good, stayed to the left of the majority of the swimmers, got hit from behind once or twice but nothing too dramatic. Got caught up in a group of around 20 swimmers when rounding the bouy, had to switch to a slow breastroke - seemed to take forever to get around the damn thing. Felt very comfortable at this stage, got back into a rhythm and tried to push it just a little bit, came out towards the front of the pack - maybe about 10 newbies ahead of me, I don't think we caught anyone from the previous wave. What would you do differently?: For shorter swims like this one, I think I can go off a little faster. Not sure how I should have dealt with the whole bouy fracas - maybe swim out wide around it, probably would work out quicker. Transition 1
Comments: Hadn't practiced transitions other than going through the motions mentally, figured I had enough other stuff to worry about. Got my wetsuit off fairly easily (a big advantage of the shorty I think). Took me a while to get my cycle jersey on over my damp and slightly flabby upper body. Had been advised to roll socks and put them in shoes and put everything else (race belt, sunglasses, gloves) in helmet. This worked out well, although I'm not sure why I bothered wearing gloves, I didn't see anyone else wearing them and I think it must have taken me close to a minute to get them on. What would you do differently?: Not wear gloves. Buy a trisuit so I don't have to put on a cycling jersey. Bike
Comments: I think this is the longest cycle I've ever done, seriously. Up until the day of the race I was under the impression that it was a 12 mile course. Still, I enjoyed myself for the most part, the hills were hard work (the ones inside the park seemed to me harder than the one on 135 which everyone else was concerned with). Headwind on 135 just prior to the long climb - this was probably the hardest stretch mentally. Need to fit an extra water bottle cage on Mav's bike. Passed a few people (mostly mountain bikes) got passed by a few people (ok - more than a few). Overall was very happy with my performance considering I didn't exactly overtrain... What would you do differently?: More bike training. Transition 2
Comments: WOW - can't believe I took this long, especially considering some people are doing this in 30 seconds. Biggest mistake was switching tops, I really didn't want to run in my cycle jersey. Plus I walked in to the TA due to jelly legs and didn't exactly sprint out... What would you do differently?: Buy a trisuit. More bricks... Run
Comments: Grabbed a bottle of Gatorade and ran with it for the first half mile, felt some slight cramping in my calves, this subsided pretty quickly. First half mile is a steady climb, nice slow pace, turned the corner and started downhill - felt good, I've been doing plenty of run training over the last 3 months and running right around 10 minute miles. The wind was tough in a couple of places, I had a little left at the end so pushed it for the last 200 yards thinking "don't leave anything on the course" and passed about three people then got caught right at the line by a guy who was running 8 minute miles - I had made 6 minutes on him during the swim and the bike and he made it all back during the run. My pace for the run was 10:05, I'm pleased that I could hold my training pace after coming off a 15 mile cycle. What would you do differently?: Maybe could have pushed a little more at some points but I'm always worried that pushing hard early will leave nothing at the end, causing a slower run overall. Post race
Warm down: Managed to gasp "Water"; walked over to Mav and the gang and had a beer (thanks John). No warm down to speak of, unless you count walking around the sponsor tables to see if I'd won a prize. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being 20 pounds overweight. Event comments: I had a great time and was very happy with my performance. MaxPerformance did a great job despite the wind, I'm really looking forward to my next race. My first triathlon, so a bit nervous... set my alarm for 6.10 but woke up at 5 just to make sure my alarm was set. Checked and rechecked my bag, had a granola bar, and plenty of water. Meant to bring a banana but forgot. Got to the event just after 7, got bodymarked and began to set up - realised I had left my wetsuit in my car... now 7.30, had to run back to the car, now getting a bit panicy - I was heading back to the TA as everone else was walking past me to the beach and I still really needed to go the bathroom (twice).
Luckily the event was delayed by about 40 minutes due to high winds causing the bouys in the lake to drift off mark. I wandered around the TA looking at other people's set ups, also found the food stand so got my banana after all, also grabbed a bottle of gatorade. I delayed getting into my shorty wetsuit for as long as possible to avoid getting cold from the wind. There was twenty minutes between the first wave and my wave so I saw the first wave go off and then went back to the TA to get ready. Back to the beach, saw Mav come out pretty much at the front of her wave, stood in the lake to get used to the temp - actually felt pretty good. Waved my arms around a bit in the name of stretching.
