Pre-race routine:

Cheerios and Coffee at the Hotel. Gu and Motrin at the beach. Find a transition spot. Walk to the swim start.
Swim
  • 24m 5s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a whole lot of suckage, just tried to remain calm and keep moving forward. Expected this result, hope for better next time.
What would you do differently?:

Considering RX swim goggles, sighting was a real problem and would have been more so if I was swimming right
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Couldn't get suit unzipped. Couldn't get swim cap off. Had that all sorted out by the time I got to my bike, but still had to peel the suit down which added some time. Otherwise pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Peel cap off differently. Pulling from top just kind of vacuumed it to my skull.
Bike
  • 41m 21s
  • 14 miles
  • 20.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride. Nice course, though it could have been better had we not had to go through the neighborhoods. Those in front of me didn't seem to want to corner as fast as I did, and there wasn't enough room to pass. Course could have easily been made into a straight out and back. Though I am assuming the cops wanted it to stay on the roads it was on. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Getting the shoes on was a little slow, so was getting up to speed. Practice more, with body glide on shoes. Otherwise, did what I could do for my first race.

ETA: need to work on bricking and getting run muscles warmed up before transition
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Nothing exciting to report, everything went smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Just move a bit quicker
Run
  • 25m 54s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs were quite tight for the first half mile. Considered walking, but my BT education gave me knowledge I needed to convince myself it would go away as the muscles loosened up. Otherwise good run. Ran my own pace, shin splints were well behaved and stayed within my means.
What would you do differently?:

train more. Having shin splints the last month kind of set me back a bit, but I'll be better prepared next time
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around looking for water (They handed me an empty water bottle at the finish), Find cheering section, wait for Eddie to finish. Post-Post-race is when the excitement happened. As we walked back to car I started to get itchy, in my ear, on my neck, at my joints, but with no sign of bites or anything. During my shower, my tongue started to swell and my joints stiffened up, and I started to realize I was having a reaction to something. Luckily one of our friends had some benadryl, but I continued to break out for a while after taking that. I got hives and rash over most of my body, especially around my joints, and I could feel tightness in my throat. I wasn't real worried about it, but I am still totally perplexed as to its cause. Oh well, A few hours of playing in the ocean and laying on the beach and it was gone, Good day.

Event comments:

Pretty good job for the inaugural year. The swim was managed perfectly. Maybe they could have numbered the bouys (I kind of forgot how many I had passed).

The bike course needs to be improved a lot. The cones at the turns prevented any kind of overtaking. And the bike trail along 611 isn't really wide enough to support multiple bikes. They should really consider closing the road and cutting it down to one direction.

The run was great, excellent support from vacationing campers as we ran through their camp ground. Post race was good. Sandwich was tasty and plenty of variety of drinks. (Didn't notice any fresh fruit, but didn't exactly look either)

Overall, good race, it will get better, Im sure.
