Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3 A.M., had a bowl of oatmeal and a banana and some coffee. Loaded up the car about 3:50 and headed down. As soon as I got to the race venue I had a half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Event warmup:

None... it was COLD... no way was I going in the water (which was WARM) and then standing around in the cold! Had a GU and water about 30 minutes before I actually started.
Swim
  • 20m 31s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim... I was able to get in the front for the in-water start, so I didn't have to battle the masses. Kept bumping into one girl doing freestyle stroke and breaststroke kick(?), but passes her halfway thru. I knew I was one of the first out of the water!!
What would you do differently?:

Sight a little better... got disoriented at the last turn, luckily someone in a kayak yelled at me to go around the buoy, saw the beach and I was off!
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

Transition area was swampy... hard getting socks on, but I had a good place on the bike rack and got out fairly quickly. Loooooong run up hill from the swim exit on grass.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing transitions.
Bike
  • 41m 50s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Quads were tight for about 3 miles, then loosened up. Concentrated on a good cadence. Shifting was good. Out of the saddle a few times, nothing major. Since I was in the first wave and so fast on the swim, I had the road almost to myself. I didn't pass anyone, and just a few passed me. Started having cramps/side stitches but in my abs?? Uncomfortable and continued into the run.
What would you do differently?:

Had a GU right before coming into transition... made my stomach upset, yuk... not again. Maybe drink a little more.
Transition 2
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

I thought this transition would be faster? One calf cramped up getting the bike shoe off and the running shoe on.
What would you do differently?:

More transition practice.
Run
  • 36m 20s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

I was hurting! My time is fantastic considering I had to walk a few times, stopped to stratch hamstrings that were wanting to cramp and the stupid side stitches in my abs... didn't feel good AT ALL until I got to the pavement and then I took off pretty well.
What would you do differently?:

More hill work, maybe some time running on grass, and definitely some more bricks... running a full 5K off the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a banana, went to the port-a-potty, put on a shirt because I was getting cold.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The stupid run!!!!!!!

Event comments:

For my first tri I am ecstatic with the results!! Same course in 3 weeks and I know what I have to work on... and hoping the run course and transition area is DRY!
