Run
Comments: Since the Marathon last September, I hadn't ran more than about 8 1/2 miles. I really didn't know what pace I should shoot for. I had done a 10 Miler last year in 1:27:22 (8:44 pace) so I knew I should be able to beat that pretty easily since my times have been much faster since the Marathon. I put in my 10K time and 5 Miler time in the ole McMillan running calculator and settled on 7:45 as a nice goal. I also made the decision to stick to that pace early in the race, rather than going with the flow. I didn't want a repeat of the 6:20 mile I busted out at the Frostbite 5 Miler. The first couple of miles I just hung back. A couple of folks seemed to be going at my pace so I hung back about 10 feet and just took it easy. It was fun being out on the bike trail on a beautiful day. It was also pretty cool seeing the leaders already hitting Mile 6 on the way back as I just hit Mile 4. Pretty dang impressive. I took half a gel at the turnaround and then I started picking people off. Had a choking incident at the Water Stop around 6 1/2 (when I finished off the gel) but other than that had a great run back. I passed a lot of people and no one passed me. Around Mile 8 I could feel that my legs were getting fatigued, but my breathing was fine. I really pushed the last mile and managed a decent kick to the finish. I did the last mile in 7:02 so that probably means I should've ran 7:30s the whole way. Ah heck with it. I'll take setting a PR by almost 10 minutes. What would you do differently?: I had a lot left in the tank, so maybe I should have pushed it more. I was just afraid of blowing up around Mile 5 or 6 since I hadn't done more than 8 1/2 miles since Sept. Post race
Warm down: Walked with my wife and headed back to Bryan Center where I pounded bananas and red vines. They gave me a 4th place trophy for my age group (out of 4!). Then today the online results show I was 5/5. I don't think I'm giving my trophy back :P Event comments: Another good race put on by the ORRRC. Last updated: 2009-03-22 12:00 AM

I love afternoon races! This one started at 1PM, so I had a nice leisurely morning and then my wife and I headed out to Yellow Springs.
I jogged a bit on the bike path before the start.
