Pre-race routine:

Got up and thought I was organized. Ate banana, powerbar and coffee about 5am. Got down to race site about 5:35am. As was bickering with hubby realized I had left my goggles back at the hotel. Hubby said "you are on your own" so I jumped back in truck, raced back to hotel and got my goggles...Things to do better prerace checklist, always leave lost of time for screw ups morning of race...Ended up being just fine just added to the jitters running around like that
Event warmup:

None...closed water start means you don't even get to see the water before you get in...
Swim
  • 31m 44s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

I am getting better but I still stink compared to everyone else. Oh well its a process maybe by next year I will do a sub 30 min swim
What would you do differently?:

not get frustrated in the middle and default to breast stroke for awile. i should have pushed myself harder to stay in freestyle and swim faster the whole time.
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

At the end of the swim they have metal stairs with volunteers who pull you up so you don't trip. Then you run up a bunch of cement stairs to the transition with lots and lots of spectators cheering for you. I think the stairs hurt my trans time...
What would you do differently?:

Spend some quality time on the stairmaster..
Bike
  • 1h 18m 42s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 19.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Very few turns on this one. My gears were all screwed up because I had put on my Zipp wheels and didn't get stuff straight so my gears kept slipping which was realy annoying
What would you do differently?:

Have a professional set up my bike with my Zipps on it..
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

I ran with my shoes on for a minute then realized I had a long way to go to my rack so stopped and took them off then I took too long getting my socks on
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn to leave shoes cipped in
Run
  • 1h 10m 30s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

I did well for me. I am a very very weak runner. I felt like I had the energy but not the legs. I got a cramp in my back during miles 4-5. I walked the really big steep hill at the beginning and the end and I walked the stairs.
What would you do differently?:

Keep trying to learn how to run faster (sigh)
Post race
Warm down:

cheering finish with my mom and kids there with cowbells Awesome! Cahtted with folks awile, had some beer watched hubby finish

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am too heavy and need to learn how to run faster

Event comments:

This race is just super big, professional, lots of crowds and sponsors. It was a blast!

Course: I thought I would love it because of how dramatic it is...you walk down a gangplank, slide into the water on your butt on the dock (there are rocks they want you to avoid) then you start swimming. You swim along a shoreline of cliffs, under three really big bridges to the park at the front of the TN Aquarium. Truth was, when you are focused on the swim you don't notice the cool cliffs or bridges. The swimming under the bridges thing kinda weirded me out a bit..I was right in the middle of the pack so I kept running into people. i think becuase of just how big the area is the swim felt like a longer swim even though it wasn't and my time was clearly helped by a current...

Course: Long rolling hills along a freeway..People complained about it not being scenic?! I thought it was realy cool and very pretty as you descend into a huge valley. I tend to become a daredevil during races so my worries about going too fast on the downhills or traffic seemed silly once I was out there. I really barely noticed any cars once you get out of the downtown area (which is pretty quickly) and the downhills were long mild slopes. I got moving pretty good on some which was needed since there were a lot of going up for awhile...I really didn't find this course scary at all. i actually really, really liked it...

Course: Big hill in the beginning then you go up and down some steep short hills then you turn and run up some stairs then you are on a flat part for 80% of the rest of the run. You run along the path that goes along the river. Very pretty. You get to finish running down hill so that is cool.
