Swim
Comments: So initially I wasn't too worried about the swim. I float well and feel pretty comfortable in the water. I got to the course and that first bouy looked REALLY far away....did some mental math to make sure I had actually swam that far in practice. Start came...after about 20 strokes every time I put my face in the water I got those panicky little breaths. Had to back stroke much of the first leg and some of the second. Goggles were new and fogged a bit and i got a little leak somewhere during the long leg. What would you do differently?: More swimming...probably a couple of OW practices would have been good. should have bought the new goggles sooner tho they did feel much better than my old ones. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was best part of race..HAHA Short uphill run on grass from lake. Didn't step on any rocks in parking lot. Into shoes quick, helmet, gloves and glasses on and away I went. Remembered my shot blocks. Foot in the pedal and swung my leg over. What would you do differently?: Nothing...oh well maybe practice with shoes on bike but was pleased with it overall. Bike
Comments: Overall course wasn't bad but the fall from last week really got into my head. I stopped and walked twice because I worried that I would fall again. Probably wouldn't have but the fear was there. Traffic was difficult. Long lines of cars and motorcycles made it really gusty. Long uphill climb back into park seemed like it would never end. Best part was the turnaround mile..different county so better road. So much smoother! Knocked my tire out of true on one of the speed bumps i think. Ate two shock blocks and managed to reattach my bike number that had come loose. My hands were numb, which was weird since that hasnt been an issue for me before. What would you do differently?: MORE HILLS. This would have been a much better ride with more hill practice. Note to self...training, training, training Transition 2
Comments: This was slower due to fact I was beat by this point. Temp was increasing and I was hot. Got shoes changed ok. What would you do differently?: More training on bike so hopefully not wiped out by end of it. Run
Comments: This was HOT. Managed slow jog at start to first aid station for water over head. Brisk walk for about the next 1/2 mile and then I was toast. Carried a water bottle with me. Water at aid stations tasted weird so drank mostly from my own bottle. Somewhere between mile 1 and 2, I got the chills and my stomach was really upset. Made it to turn around aid station- had two cups of water over head and then gatorade, water and ice refilled in my bottle. Started to feel a little better but then breeze was gone on lake side trail. I felt really overheated, noticed I wasn't really sweating either. Kept going..coming into to last aid station, volunteer met me about 25 ft out with spray bottles and sprayed me until I got under the canopy. I asked if he could do that for the last mile...obviously still had some sense of humor left. Last mile had a couple of big hills...or big to me...passed by some guy just out running for fun...thought about asking if he had a tow rope. One hill left and could hear my friends yelling at me, wanted to lift my pace but I had absolutely nothing left. They walked in the rest of the way with me. Crossed finish line and announcer said the wrong name. That was disappointing. What would you do differently?: hmmm.. well obviously run more. But I think too not do a race in this heat again. I never got my temp under control. Post race
Warm down: Walked down to lake, drank a vitamin water and a bottle of water. Got in lake for a few minutes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of fitness and temperature. Swim started at 9:10 so I didn't hit the run course until almost 12. It was hot. Event comments: Overall, race was well run. Volunteers were great. The course itself has a few issues. Road condition on bike and the run course is pretty rough. I think an earlier start time would be helpful for those of us who are old and slow.. :) Last updated: 2009-03-24 12:00 AM

Up at 5. Had a Cliff Bar, banana and yogurt for breakfast. Got to race site around 7. Not too many people there yet. There was a Super Sprint that started at 8:30 so more of those people were there. Got a spot on the rack and set my stuff up. Used restroom then wandered around aimlessly for awhile. Had a nice chat with a few other women who racked next to me..also their first race.
Didnt really do much warmup which in retrospect probably would have been good. Watched the super sprint swimmers start. Should have gotten into the water earlier and swam a bit...see the swim section...
