Pre-race routine:

Didn't rest well on Saturday before the race, very hectic day with kids.
Pretty good night's sleep and woke up on time!!
Ate 1 cup of hot cereal, a granola bar and 2 glasses of water.
Met at friends house and folled each other there...

Big Mistake: left late and traffic was horrible. Sat in traffic for about a hour then decided 20min before the start to quickly find a place to park and run to the starting line. Had about 5 min. to rest before the gun.
Event warmup:

Jogged from my car to the starting line...about 1 to 1.5 miles.

  • 13.35 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Run went pretty well...met both of my goals...to finish and to beat 2 hours. I began by hanging around the 3:50 hr pace runners for the marathon. After the Marathon and Half split I started following the 2 hr Half-Marathon pace runners. This was good for my confidence eventhough I had a Garmin that I borrowed, I was still nervous that I wouldn't use it correctly.
Knees started to hurt a bit at mile 12...may need some more strength training...maybe need new shoes.
Had perfect amount of water, GU, etc.

What would you do differently?:

I wore an over shirt which was good for the first 3 miles but then I had to take it off and wrap it around my waist. Next time, suck it up for the first 3 miles.
Thought about bringing music, but I could go either way on this.
Need to start out faster, I believe my early paces were closer to 10 min. due to not knowing how I would do and feel at then end. This could be a good opportunity to get 2 or 3 minutes back.
Post race
Warm down:

Overall, OK. Wasn't a whole lot of room to walk around at the end of the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience was my biggest factor...unsure of how I would do at this distance...longest ever for me.

Event comments:

My only issue was that you had to walk a bit and stand in line (10 min) to go into the finishers area and get water and food. They need to have water immediately after the race.

OH, and my Garmin and my buddies Garmin both had the race at 13.35 miles not 13.1 miles.
