The Fantastic Nantasket Beach Triathlon
60F / 16C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 30m 5s
Overall Rank = 416/537
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

ate the usual breakfast of protien /fruit smoothie followed by a pb and raisin sandwich. unpacked my tri bag that i had packed the night before just to ensure that i remembered everything. this behavior is typical race day jitters of course and, required me to repack the darn bag. in the end i still could not remember where anything was placed in the compartments. 16 oz of cytomax on the way to the race.
Event warmup:

quick, brief run on the beach to warm up; a lot of walking around and having mental chats with myself. a lot of staring at the crashing waves and convincing myself that i can do this.
Swim
  • 19m 50s
  • 440 yards
  • 04m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

i worked hard but am pleased that i had the same time as the danskin tri two months prior that occurred in a calm lake; proof that i have improved but i still have a really long way to go with my swimming technique.
What would you do differently?:

practice at the actual event beach instead of the more convenient bay that has no waves; take some lessons to improve my technique or lack thereof.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

no time provided by officials but i removed the googles, cap, and suit to the thighs before reaching my bike. got out of wetsuit fairly quickly but didn't put helmet or glasses on while stripping. got on bike but struggled w/right shoe getting into the clip that definitely cost me time.
What would you do differently?:

put helmet and glasses on while pulling suit off lower legs.
Bike
  • 37m 40s
  • 10 miles
  • 15.93 mile/hr
Comments:

officials had technical problems and were unable to ranks. the ride was okay but my time was disappointing.
What would you do differently?:

train harder
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

no idea what my time was but I was in motion the entire time I was racking and changing shoes.
What would you do differently?:

jump of the bike at a faster speed and run faster with the bike into the transition area.
Run
  • 30m 19s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

wet, packed sand at low tide that was similar to running on a cushy track; it got thick in a few places but no more than a couple of steps each time. my breathing issues were fairly significant by this time in the race so i actually stopped for 10 secs in the last qtr of the run.
What would you do differently?:

my goal was to keep it under 10 mph so I would push myself harder.
Post race
Warm down:

a few mild stretches, a sport drink, bagel, and a bunch of red grapes that I just couldn't get enough of :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

an upper respiratory infection on top of asthma. a change in meds may make a difference.

Event comments:

i got chilly waiting for the start that was set for 12:00 but the 1st wave didn't go off until 12:35. There was some kind of technical difficulties with the timing chips that prevented the recording of transition times which was disappointing. other than these two issues i enjoyed myself and will do it again next year.
