Swim
Comments: a good swim, not as crowed as I was afraid did not have to spend the entire swim going around people. Went out med-hard for the first couple of minutes to get ahead of the main pack, then slowed down to a cruise rhythm staying to the outside close to the buoys all the way down. What would you do differently?: nothing, it was a good swim, hope to have more like that. The only thing to really do differently would be to wear the rest of the race gear under the wetsuit, as this was my first time swimming in the wetsuit I did not want anything that might not be comfortable. Transition 1
Comments: Used the wetsuit strippers, went well. What would you do differently?: It was a huge transition, should have put the shoes on the bike and while not jumping on the bike could still have put them on at the mount line or tried something like that - need to think about this. Bike
Comments: Course was great with completely closed roads. Had too short of a tailwind for the strong headwind for the last hour or so. Became uncomfortable about half way through and trouble staying on the aero bars for the last half which was made worse by the head wind. The last hour or so pretty much wrecked my legs for the run. What would you do differently?: Figure some way to be able to stay more aero into the wind (it is New Orleans after all - what are the chances of a strong wind, of course there will be wind). Drink more, I went through both bottles of drink that I brought with me and one that I picked up on the course, but was probably still dehydrated a bit going into the run. Transition 2
Comments: had to visit the port - a - can on the way through, otherwise a smooth transition What would you do differently?: should have left the shoes on the pedals and walked/jogged in my socks - really big transition and that cost me some time ... would also have been good if I did not have add in the bathroom stop Run
Comments: my legs were gone from the bike ride and I struggled with the first 5km into the wind. Between the heat (30 according to the bike computer) and the wind I was not feeling good. Decided to run between water stations and then walked while drinking 2 cups of gatorade. Unbelievably the miles at the end were actually easier than the first few and I probably could have kept going like I was for another few. What would you do differently?: Pay more attention to drinking and eating on the bike. I am sure that paid for the mistakes on the bike course during the run. Post race
Event comments: Really happy with the race over all, especially as it was my first HIM. The support along the course from the locals was amazing, especially appreciated the people with their water hoses and sprinklers out during the run. The finish running into the quarter and then along decateur was great. Will most likely do this again next year. Last updated: 2009-03-25 12:00 AM

Drove to NO on Friday arriving just in time for the briefing. Dropped the bike off and drove the bike course on Sat. Spent the rest of the pre-race time taking in and enjoying the garden district and the french quarter.
Work up at 4:30 and got to transition early, setup, and then walked over to the swim start and found a good place along the sea wall to watch the start.
