  • Comments: I didn't go into this race with super-high expectations, but I had a really good experience. Louisville is a very cool town with good stuff to do for the family and some excellent food. The bike course was absolutely beautiful, and the TT start is great. Volunteers were tremendous. I know WTC gets a hard time from some folks because of a perception they are excessively profit-driven, but man, they put on a great event. I want to try some other venues so may not return to Louisville, but I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants a challenging but fair course in a great, family-friendly venue.

  • Comments: I think my training prepared me well. I think sticking to my race plan and maintaining a positive outlook was critical to my success. Thinking about my family, my supporters, and everyone "tracking" my progress was plenty of motivation. I never "hit the wall" or had any feeling of regret, dought, etc. It was a great experience. Carrying chap stick on the bike and run turned out to be critical to my comfort in the warm and dry climate! It's the simple things...

  • Comments: For those thinking of doing this, first chose your race based on your abilities rather than location. For those who can stay on their feet until midnight to see the last official finisher, don't miss this! That is what IM is all about... first or last you are an Ironman. One last note, the volunteers were the best in any race I have done in 6 years. Who could stand out there for 12+ hrs in heat dealing with people who are in all different mental and physical states and do it so well, I thanked as many as I could have, they made the day too.

  • Comments: First ever Ironman. Was a blast. So impressed with WTC's logistics. Yes, M-Dots are expensive, but they sure put on a great show. Volunteers were super.

  • Comments: Even though I did DNF, I had a great time. I completed nearly 3/4 of an Ironman. I was thankful all day long just to be out on the course participating. It was a long day, but a good day. I hope that just by starting I inspired a few people back at home. I can't say enough good things about the volunteers. They were awesome. Everything from check in to the finish line was great. I have never been to a race with such great volunteers. The only real complaints I have are allowing too many cars onto the bike course. This turned into a real safety issue as us slower bikers were trying to get back in. Also, it would be nice for the slower runners to not have to run through the crowds at the turn around to start your second loop. People were cheering me on to finish and when they saw me head out on the second loop they seemed to almost pity me. If they could just move the turn around over a block would be nice. One last thing. Some of our fellow athletes were frickin slobs

  • Comments: Well - it was 364 days from my first tri to ironman - what a year! Also 2011 was my first olympic/half/full distance. I will say that I was happy with my time and race in Lousiville since I had no issues after the race and actually have been out on a run since the race and plan on a long run tomorrow. All the soreness was gone in 24 hours and was pretty much back to normal by tuesday morning. Where to go from here? I am not sure what path I am going to take from here. Do I do another full or stick with some shorter races. Baby #2 will be here in Feb and that wil definitly put a time limit on training. I will say that I have met more people in the past year than the past 5 years combined. This sport has lead me on a transformation that has been needed - I dont want it to end but I also have a wife, 2 year old and one on the way that need my time. So maybe I run and get a few marathons in next year then in 2013 return to the full distance??? What ever happens I will keep my

  • Comments: I loved the race and more so, the journey to get there. I may do it again in 2012 but I want to see how I feel about it in a week or so and let the "high" wear off first. They say trying to plan your IM is like trying to land a man on the moon. You just never know what the day is gonna throw at ya. For two years I had envisioned how I was gonna run that race but somebody else had other plans. I am grateful that as I was out there on that run course feeling pretty bad, I kept my wits about me and accepted that I wasn't going to be able to perform as I had hoped. Had I pressed the issue, I may have ended up back in a hospital with a DNF. I've competed in 3 half distance events, and now this full distance event. I have yet to get my nutrition/hydration right. Hopefully the 3rd year doing triathlons is a charm!!! Signing off.....

  • Comments: While not perfect, I made a plan and stuck with it to a tee. I would have loved to come home with a flashier time but I am coming home a finisher. Even as late as the Friday night dinner, I was not sure I was going to make it. I always said I was going to do this only once, but I still wonder what it would have been like to line up on the start healthy. Maybe just maybe that will cause me to sign up for one of these again.

  • Comments: Would I do it again? Yes ... and soon ... but ... not ... quite yet. Next year I'll probably do the American Birkebeiner 55K XC ski race since I'm really a XC racer at my core (I've been doing it since the early 1980s), and maybe the One Day Ride Across Michigan (about 152 miles), and perhaps a couple of 1/2 IMs plus some of my favorite Olympic distance races that my wife and I enjoy doing together. Most of all, I hope to do some more volunteering at tri races, something I skipped doing this year but really missed. I would pass that along to all of you: Spend some time helping out at tris. Your experience, knowledge and enthusiasm will help others out much more than you'll know! Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to read such a long novel-like report. Tailwinds to y'all! -Todd

  • Comments: I am thrilled that I was able to participate in and complete Ironman Louisville for a second time. It was a rewarding experience from beginning to end. I am thankful for a lot of things, but particularly my family and friends who supported me from at the race and at home, and BT crew that was on hand at the race. I was inspired by all them. This was a very bare bones version of my race, I intend to provide a much more detail account for my blog and then in my book, The Road to Ironman Louisville 2011, A Man, a Journey, and 140.6 Miles of Swim, Bike, Run. I hope to have it out in the next month or so.

  • Comments: I felt great at the end of the race and still had plenty of energy left to do whatever, including running another Ironman… ok, maybe tomorrow. I stuffed down four pieces of pizza and stretched out a little while and watched some of the other finishers. It took me the rest of the night to realize my life dream of becoming an Ironman just happened that day. I never had a moment of doubt during the day that I would complete this challenge and I feel as though all my training has paid off much more than I had believed in. After my first half ironman, I told myself I’d never do another one of those and I had serious doubts about being able to one day finish a full Ironman. Now, a year and a half later, after my first Ironman, right after crossing the finish, I’m ready to sign up for the next one. I am so thankful for this sport and all I have learned and experienced from the past few years and excited to see what the next season will hold. To all those looking to becoming an Ironman, remember

  • Comments: 2450 started and 2287 finished. 163 DNF'd. 93% finished, which was really good. Sadly, one guy had a heart attack and died in the water. That led to some people being delayed getting into the water. They extended the finish time to 12:10 a.m. because of that.

  • Comments: WTC did a great job with this race. Those that wonder if they should spend the money for an IM branded race I say absolutely yes. The race was well organized and the volunteers were awesome. I couldn't be happier with my experience.
