  • Comments: I love this race. In part because i love the venue. This is a fitting culminating event for a tough but rewarding season for me. There are peculiarities about this race that may frustrate some. The residents of Avalon will not be held down by anybody's attempts at traffic control no matter how valiant, the transition area is in the sand, the bike course can get downright crowded....whatever. If you can keep it in perspective and remember to have a good time, I recommend this race.

  • Comments: Well, the island itself is gorgeous. A lovely resort town, amidst stunning natural beauty. However, this is not a race I personally need to do again. The course was somewhat dangerous (the bike course was so narrow that there was literally no choice but to draft for many people) with hairpin turns and very little marking. I also didn't love the general attitude of the race. I'm sure Hermosa spoiled me rotten, but it seemed like the volunteers really weren't sure what was happening, the course changed constantly (the bouys were moved every 5 minutes until the start of the swim!) and the bike course was dangerous. Also, SO many of the racers were taking it so extraordinarily seriously and generally were quite negative about everything and nasty to us slower folk. I can't imagine with all my experience with wonderful triathletes that this is a representative of a normal race.

  • Comments: This was a phenomenal race. I love the location. I love the small town feel of all the racers being in town together. The scenery was gorgeous. The water was clear and amazing. This was a technically difficult course, but some courses are, and that's okay. It was my fault that I wasn't ready for this course. It had nothing to do with the course being bad. I plan to train on hills, get more fit, and return for a strong follow up next year. 52 weeks from now, I plan to kick some island athena ass!
