  On October 13th, 2003, we all lost a very special friend when Cynthia Holcomb passed away suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 48. She was more than special, she was angelic, and touched the lives of many people. Especially children. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have spent time with Cynthia know she would do anything, for anyone, any time. What she cherished most was helping children, especially in their pursuit of excellence in the activity of their choice.
  
  One of Cynthia’s projects was helping with the Magic Shoe Foundation, a program involving me and a group of students. Together, we collect used running shoes that are then cleaned and refurbished. These shoes are passed on to needy kids in the local area so they can start or continue their running careers. When I told Cynthia we distribute 300 to 500 pairs each year, she thought we could do better.
  
  “We need to do 1,000 pairs each year!” she said.

  Since running was such a large part of Cynthia Holcomb’s life, I decided to dedicate the Bastille Day 5K Run in her honor. It would please her to no end to have thousands of runners celebrating her special life with a run. This year, the race will be held on Sunday, July 15th, 2007 at the Greater Irvine Spectrum. Save the date and join us in the celebration of this unique and very special woman while at the same time supporting her favorite cause: the children.
