- Description: Formerly known as Coogan's Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K, we've changed the name of this race to truly celebrate the vibrant neighborhood in which it takes place.
Upper Manhattan's diverse and picturesque Washington Heights neighborhood provides the backdrop for this 5K. On a hilly course that circles Fort Tryon Park and the historic Cloisters, runners are serenaded by musical groups playing—you guessed it—salsa, blues, and Irish folk music, plus gospel, merengue, and jazz!
A race within the race honors Captain Frederick Ill, Jr., a local firefighter who lost his life on 9/11. High school girls' and boys' teams compete for the Dr. Norbert Sander High School Open awards, and races for youngsters ages 2 to 12 are held after the 5K—between 25 yards and a half-mile on Fort Washington Avenue. They’ll sprint to the finish banner, where every participant will receive a medal from New York City firefighters and police officers.
