- Description: The Fourth Annual Tour de Ruidoso will give you the challenge you have been looking for. Beginning with a climb from 6840 to 7485, a downhill and the climb back to 7482 and then down to 7257. And that is in the first 6 miles! After check point 3, you will drop out of the evergreen forest into the Sonoran Desert and wind your way to Capitan, NM. The Century riders climb to the Capitan Gap where Smokey Bear was found.
From Capitan you continue east and then south to Ft. Stanton. Here you begin the climb to the mesa and the Sierra Blanca Regional Airport. Open country and magnificent views will keep you going back to Highway 48 and the last leg into Ruidoso.
The beautiful scenery will amaze you as you tour through history. Geronimo’s Apaches roamed these hills. Black Jack Pershing and the Buffalo Soldiers served at Ft. Stanton. This is Billy the Kid country. The Lincoln County War was fought in this area and you may still see a stagecoach crossing the mountains near you. Smokey Bear was born and buried here.
