  Nestor Gernay started a triathlon on this course in October 1979 with 12 finishers. Up to this point only Ironman Hawaii had conducted a Swim—bike—run triathlon format in a competition event.
  
  While some think San Diego is the start of the US Mainland triathlon . Their events were strictly club training events that did not have the swim– bike–run format.
  
  In 2008 the Tradition continued with the first Savannah “ Rock of the Marne” Triathlon where 200 racers joined Nestor in bringing it back!
