- Description: In April the 2013 International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon San Diego event will feature age-group races consisting of more than 3,000 amateurs competing in the same venue as the world's best pro triathletes. The Olympic-Distance Race, Olympic-Distance Relay and Sprint Race will take place for age-group athletes on Saturday, April 20. All events will start and end in Mission Beach. An expo and festival also will be held there from April 18-20 as part of race weekend. Admission for spectators is free and open to the public all week including at the pro races.
The race venue/transition area is located in Mission Beach, while the swim consists of one lap in Ventura Cove. The bike portion will now head out from Mission Beach towards Sunset Cliffs, past Sea World, and features a loop around Fiesta Island, the site of the first-ever triathlon held in September 1974. This course returns to the original roots of triathlon leading up to the 40 year anniversary of the sport. The run portion is along the paths and streets of Mission Beach.
