Member Question: Determining VO2 max for cycling?
How do you determine VO2 max for cycling? I have my HR zones from a time trial, but don't know how to get VO2 max out of that.

Answer
VO2 max is the highest amount of oxygen the body can utilize during maximal exercise. It’s a common metric used for predicting endurance potential. It sounds like you’re trying to find your VO2 max HR.
Your HR at VO2 max will vary depending on things such as temperature, how fresh or recovered you are, and time at VO2 max intensity. The best way to set HR zones for VO2 max is to put your body at that intensity level. I recommend performing an all-out six-minute cycling test or time trial and recording your HR during the second half. Just glancing at your HR monitor about three minutes in and then at the end can give you a loose zone too.
For example, say three minutes into the test your HR is 176 bpm and when it finishes you’re at 180 bpm. This gives you a range of 176-180 for your VO2 max intervals. I’ve found this method more accurate than any of the formulas based on your age or already established lower heart rate zones.
