I'm considering a road frame buildup, what considerations should I take into account when swapping all of my components from my current setup to a new frame?

Question from Nevergivin

I'm considering a road frame buildup, what considerations should I take into account when swapping all of my components from my current setup to a new frame in regards to technical references, compatibility issues, etc. for someone that is mechanically inclined but not shop certified?

Answer

There may be compatibility issues if your original frame/components are in excess of 20 years old (rear spacing changed from 126/128mm to 130mm as well as some other specifications). Also, the front derailleur may be a clamp version as opposed to a braze-on, so if this is the case you can buy adapters if you have a braze-on front derailleur and want to use it on a round tube bike but not vice versa. The chain may be too short depending on the bikes in question. You may require additional things like new cables, housings, and maybe some new bolts.

If the new frame has different geometry then you may require a different length/angle stem or a seatpost with a different setback to make the positions the same. If you’re going from an external headset to an internal headset, then that component will need to be added. A change to internal headset will also effectively reduce your head tube length by a couple centimeters, so this needs to be taken into account when matching your position. There are many things that can be different so it would be a good idea to visit or call the local shop with a specific concern aside from what was discussed here.
