Member Question: Tri-Sympathetic Family Doctor
How do I find a GP/family doctor that also understands swimming/running/biking
Question by Huengsolo:
Here's one that I think I should know the answer to - but just plain don't. How do I find a GP/family doctor that also understands swimming/running/biking (and the associated injury/muscle stress questions)? Also, is a sports medicine doc able to also function as a GP - a la how my wife sees her OB/GYN for everything ...?
Answer:
You can locate a primary care physician with training in sports medicine through the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). This group is composed of doctors who trained in primary care specialties like family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics, plus non-operative sports medicine. Look for a doctor in your locale by logging onto the AMSSM web site. You might also find a physician with this background by checking with fellow athletes or training groups.
Sports medicine is a broad field, but many sports medicine physicians are trained in family or internal medicine in addition to sports medicine, and can provide you with the full range of medical care. Most orthopedic sports medicine physicians limit their practice to musculoskeletal problems.
