"The Triathlon Project is an engaging piece of nonfiction, part instruction and part memoir. The author is a highly accomplished gentleman, having wrapped up a career in a high-level government position in Finland when he decided to take up triathlon. His story of being weighed before boarding a small aircraft and being shocked at the number on the scale is memorable. Through his eyes, we learn about the effects of different nutritional strategies on weight loss and training, and we remember what it was like when we couldn't run a mile or swim a lap without stopping. His story is heartwarming and encouraging."alicefoeller
Strengths
This is a refreshingly light and earnest look at starting out in the sport of triathlon, learning the lessons of nutrition and fitness and bike handling, etc. Niklas' story is engaging and captures many of the aspects we forget as we move along the road to being triathletes. By the time most of us are ready to write a book, we've forgotten the awkward moments and seemingly obvious lessons we didn't understand at the time. Niklas has captured these.
Weakness
The book is printed in English, but English is not Niklas' first language. I didn't know this as I began to read the book, and became somewhat angry at what I perceived to be careless usage and spelling issues. Once I caught on that the author is from Finland, I became much more forgiving, and reading the book was like talking to an intelligent friend with an accent.
Value
Through the author's eyes, we learn about the effects of different nutritional strategies on weight loss and training, and we remember what it was like when we couldn't run a mile or swim a lap without stopping.
