Swim
Comments: This was a good swim for me. It is always the thing I worry about most, but the water was pretty calm and so was I. All 135 of us started together but I seeded myself all the way in the back to the right of the masses and it worked well. I sited every 10 strokes which kept me on track. Passed people going out and coming in which is unheard of for me. RD changed where we exit the H20 on the fly so I overshot that by quite a ways, but other than that SNAFU all was good. What would you do differently?: I swallowed a ton of air which came back to bite me on the run so I need to figure out how to eliminate that for next year. Transition 1
Comments: Long run from the beach to my bike because I seeded myself close to the bike out/run out area. First time I have run after the swim. Also cut my wetsuit legs before this race so it came off much easier. Steve had me lay out my things sequentially this time which shaved off seconds. What would you do differently?: Just get faster! Bike
Comments: My goal was to stay in Z3 as much as possible except on the initial big hill.Had the same stomach issues as before so didn’t start fueling for 15 minutes, but then was religious about fueling every 10 minutes. Stomach started to get worse so I remembered what Steve said, back off and keep taking in calories. Results in a cumulative hour of Z2. It didn’t help my stomach. I geared down and spun up all the hills. I had to stop twice to fill H20 bottles so next year I am going to learn to do this on the fly because I am sure I lost 2-3 mins here. Had to stop once for traffic. Also took Steve's advice on the last few hills into LG, pick up speed on the downhill to get up the hill in the big chain ring. It worked well. Ingested 320 calories and 72 oz H20. I was hoping to get in 400 calories so I could have strength on the run. What would you do differently?: The stomach was the limiter and it is all related to swimming. Transition 2
Comments: Took my fuel belt with 16 oz water because I had heard the course usually runs out. What would you do differently?: Get faster Run
Comments: Pathetic, I haven't been this slow since I don't know when. Stomach a huge issue. I started running and kept telling myself one foot in front of the other. I didn’t look at my GPS. Hit that first hill and walked some and on and on it went. Dumped my fuel belt because it was awful around the waist. Tried to take some of a gel at 3m, nope. Decided to try to run up the hills, left adductor/quad cramps. Just drank water, walked/ran and made it to the finish line. What would you do differently?: The common theme, the stomach. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the line, took a bottle of water, didn't drink it. Didn't eat until 5pm--stomach was still a wreck. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think you have heard it enough! Event comments: This race had a bad reputation for having poor course markings and few volunteers. I actually thought it was reasonable. We had a lot of traffic to contend with and there were some interesections that had no people to direct traffic, but overall it was better than I thought it would be. I won't do it again. The run was just too crazy for me even if my stomach wasn't an issue. There was a fair amount of cheating going on....long lines of bikers riding together (almost like a pace line) and several people that cut off part of the HIM run course since there were no timing mats. I guess they all have to live with themselves. The #3 AG behind me cheated and if she would have beaten my I think I might have slugged her :) Last updated: 2009-05-11 12:00 AM

Three days of carb loading prior. Didn't sleep well since this was my first HIM so up at 2:45 for the usual cofee/1 piece of toast. Headed to the venue at 4:30am for a 6am start.
10 minutes in the water. It was pitch black at that point, but felt like I had to get in to get used to it.
